We are seeking individuals who are interested in helping ACPL further our mission of enriching the community through lifelong learning and discovery.


We are looking for a detail and customer service-oriented assistant for our Genealogy department. The Genealogy Assistant will be responsible for shelving all Genealogy Center materials, assists in scanning materials, article fulfillment, and helping patrons as required.


You must pass the Dewey Decimal Skills Test before your application will be considered. The Dewey Decimal Skills test can be taken at any library location during hours of operation. There is a study guide available on the Human Resources career site.


The work schedule is 20 hours per week and will include evenings and weekends.


Essential Functions:


• Shelves books, periodicals, and other genealogy materials.

• Maintains orderly appearance of the Center by clearing tables of books, periodicals, and other library materials as well as straightening tables, chairs, and other materials periodically.

• Performs routine shelf readings to locate and/or ensure proper location of genealogy materials.

• Processes, sorts, and shelves new books, including shifting the collection as necessary.

• Inspects materials for damage; refers situations to a genealogy librarian or supervisor as appropriate.

• Retrieves court ledgers and other materials from closed-stack, storage areas for patrons.

• Assists patrons with the use of the photocopiers, scanners, and similar equipment.

• Assists patrons with logging on computers.

• Refers unusual situations to a genealogy librarian and/or supervisor.

• Assists in receiving and processing large donations.

• Assists in collection development by scanning both loaned and donated items for presentation on the web.

• Assists in collection development by printing for binding materials scanned or donated in digital format for the physical collection.

• Engages in fulfillment of patron requests for pages from books, articles from periodicals, and obituaries.

• Configures the seating in the Discovery Center for various meetings and programs. .

• Performs opening and closing duties as directed.

• Answers customers’ directional questions.

• Utilizes library technology to check email, search various datafiles, and create documents detailing new and scanned collections.

• Promotes and supports the overall mission of the Library by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

Required Qualifications
  • No education or experience required

  • Starting pay is 13.77 and up based on experience

Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Mobility to work in an office setting, use standard office equipment and stamina to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time; strength to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and push carts that weigh up to 100 pounds; agility to bend, reach and climb; vision to read printed materials and computer screens; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
