Purpose and Objective
The Customs Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring the organization’s compliance with global trade regulations and customs requirements. This role involves managing the proper classification of goods, optimizing duties and taxes, facilitating import/export activities, and ensuring adherence to all applicable laws. Success in this role requires a strong understanding of customs processes, trade compliance, and collaboration across teams to integrate compliance into supply chain operations.
Customs Compliance:- Ensure compliance with international trade laws, customs regulations, and import/export requirements across all regions.
- Oversee the preparation and submission of customs documentation, including invoices, packing lists, and declarations.
- Manage Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications, valuation, and country-of-origin determinations for all products.
- Serve as a liaison with customs brokers to facilitate the clearance of customs entries and resolve inquiries.
- Conduct research on customs rulings, laws, and regulations to provide clear guidance internally.
- Maintain and update the company’s Customs Import Procedures Guide and ensure recordkeeping compliance.
Duties and Tax Management:- Analyze duties, taxes, and other charges to identify opportunities for cost optimization while ensuring full compliance.
- Leverage duty relief programs such as Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), bonded warehouses, and customs waivers.
- Track and report export shipment data for filing duty drawback claims with customs authorities.
Audits and Risk Management:- Conduct periodic audits of customs and trade processes to identify risks and ensure accuracy.
- Address customs inquiries, investigations, and disputes professionally and in a timely manner.
- Maintain records and reports to support compliance audits and regulatory requirements.
Collaboration and Training:- Work with cross-functional teams, including Logistics, Finance, Legal, Development and Production, to integrate compliance into supply chain operations.
- Coordinate with staff on requirements from customs and other government agencies, such as the Fish and Wildlife Service, Federal Trade Commission, and safety regulations.
- Stay informed about global trade regulatory updates, port policies, and changes in customs laws, communicating relevant information internally.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex trade and customs regulations.
Requirements and Skills:- Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in customs and trade compliance, preferably in a multinational environment.
- Proven experience with domestic and international HTS classifications, Free Trade Agreements, and customs valuation.
- Strong understanding of global customs regulations, compliance software, and trade agreements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and enterprise systems such as NetSuite.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies.
- Familiarity with Customs ACE and monthly ACH processes is a plus.
- Knowledge of customs procedures in regions such as Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Canada is desirable.
$90,000 - $110,000 a year
