Position Summary

The Assistant for Library Operations and Professional Development will primarily work collaboratively with the Head Lower School and Upper School Librarians to maintain and enhance library services for our K-8 student body, faculty, and staff.  This position plays a vital role in fostering a love of reading and supporting our students' academic growth. This position also supports the Director of Curriculum and Innovation 25% of the time in managing faculty and staff professional growth. This is an on-campus, .85 role that runs mid-August to mid-June. Standard hours are 9am - 3:20 pm Monday through Friday, with periodic required meetings throughout the year that extend past 3:20 pm.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Instruction:
    • Assist with library lessons and activities that promote reading, critical thinking, and digital literacy skills for students at all grade levels
    • Lead library classes as needed
    • Assist students in using the library catalog, digital resources, and reference tools
    • Support student research as needed
    • Assist students and their families in finding books that foster a love of reading
    • Support teachers with finding resources to support classroom instruction

Collection Management:

  • Assist librarians in maintaining the library's collection
  • Organize and catalog library materials, ensuring easy access and accurate recordkeeping
  • Perform regular weeding of outdated or damaged materials
  • Book processing, covering, and repair

Library Operations and Professional Development Program Support:

    • Supervise students during library visits, ensuring a safe and respectful environment
    • Manage book circulation, assist with materials check-out and track overdue books
    • Help organize and maintain a welcoming and inspiring library environment with displays that encourage learning and curiosity
    • Train and manage parent volunteers in the library
    • Assist the Director of Curriculum and Innovation in providing information, support, and materials as necessary for the Burke’s Professional Development program

  • Bachelor’s degree and K-8 school experience
  • Experience with library management systems
  • Previous experience in a school library setting
  • Knowledge of children's and young adult literature
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, bustling environment
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with technology and basic computer applications
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with discretion
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds to move books, library carts, supplies, and materials, etc.

Compensation

The pay range is $29.00 to $43.00 per hour, depending on experience. Comprehensive benefits are provided, including retirement contributions. More information about the school can be found on the website at www.Burkes.org.
