REPORTING TO: Group Head of Nature

GRADE: Associate Analyst, 2-5 years of experience

Tracker Group is a UK-based, not-for-profit think tank. Our aim is to enable a Paris-aligned, nature-positive global economy by aligning capital market actions with planetary boundaries. We are the home of the two award-winning research brands, Carbon Tracker and Planet Tracker, which together comprise Tracker Group combined under one corporate entity since 2022.

Associate Analyst, Nature – Job Specification

INTRODUCTION

Tracker Group is committed to advancing a Paris-aligned, nature-positive global economy through cutting-edge research and impactful stakeholder engagement. The Associate Analyst will play a key role in realising this vision by researching and analysing the financial materiality of the key drivers of biodiversity loss in different nature-impacting industries, to produce impactful research that will convince financial institutions to address nature issues.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Analyst, Nature will be integral to the successful delivery of the Nature team’s research (operating under the Planet Tracker brand). The role will involve researching and analysing specific industries and/or companies from a financial and environmental perspective, to produce incisive research pieces that incite financial institutions to act.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the research and analysis of the Nature team (see Planet Tracker for examples of recent reports)
  • Contribute to driving research conclusions by collecting, organising and analysing public disclosures, proprietary datasets and other data sources
  • Help review and write high quality public reports and commentary
  • Prepare presentation materials for investor audiences
  • Perform ad hoc analysis as required
  • Suggest new ideas for research projects
  • Attend conferences, webinars, and investor meetings as deemed appropriate
  • Over time, produce research independently and present it externally

A TYPICAL DAY

A typical day in the role of Associate Analyst might include:

  • Starting the morning by reading about any relevant development in the nature finance space or the industry currently researched (this could be e.g. agriculture, fishing, aquaculture, plastics, chemicals)
  • Spending most of the day investigating a specific environmental issue from a financial lens, by breaking the overall problem (for instance: ‘is there a link between the sustainability of a fishery and its profitability?’ or ‘What is the financial risk associated with toxic chemicals?’) into a series of smaller tasks (e.g. collecting sustainability data, cleaning and matching different datasets, describing the methodology followed, etc.)
  • Checking in with the Data team to conceptualise the analysis required to solve a given problem and collaborate with them as needed
  • Discussing with other members of the Nature team to ensure any idea or finding is shared, or to look for help in overcoming obstacles
  • Performing ad-hoc analysis as required (e.g. analyse past impacts of our research, or help conduct background research on a new topic)
  • Preparing a presentation on a given topic based on existing materials
  • Exchanging ideas or generally bonding with the team around a coffee

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Research and Analysis: Demonstrated experience (> 2 years) in research and financial analysis.
  • Financial Ecosystem Knowledge: An understanding of how financial markets operate, ideally with prior experience working in a financial institution, within the financial ecosystem, for a sustainable finance research provider, or within a civil society organisation that worked with finance stakeholders.
  • Critical and Analytical Thinker: Demonstrates the ability to challenge assumptions, construct logical arguments, and apply lateral thinking to complex issues.
  • Desire to Learn: Willingness to continuously learn, engage with research content, and upskill on related issues to help financial markets understand why climate and nature need to be addressed to manage financial risks and opportunities.
