Our HSE & Wellbeing team do incredible mahi every day to embed a modern, progressive safety culture that keeps our people well and happy, and our Health and Safety Specialist Andre has been a pivotal part of that. As he sets off now to explore a new opportunity, we’re looking for somebody just as great to pick up where he left off in being a leading advocate for industry best practice Health & Safety at Contact (on a 6-month fixed term contract basis at this stage as we work through a potential integration).

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

Reporting to our Head of Safety Leadership, in this 6-month fixed term contract as Health and Safety Specialist you’ll support the strategic transformation of Health & Safety at Contact. The go-to person for any questions beyond the scope of an H&S Advisor, your in-depth knowledge of critical risk management and assessment will come to life here as you take a context-driven, pragmatic approach to further embed the safety culture we’re proud of.

While compliance plays an obvious part, we’re more focused on the psychology of humans. We’re working in a really progressive way across the board compared to many other NZ businesses, and safety is no exception. A close-knit team who challenge each other’s thinking, our HSE & Wellbeing rōpū are all driven by the common goal of getting everyone home healthily and safely and work together to be context-driven and pragmatic about everything – that’s something to be proud of in itself. We have worked hard over many years to help our people create safe ways of working, trusting them to do their best work every day, encouraging involvement and supporting work with systems and processes that help rather than hinder getting work done efficiently and safely. Our work fronts are complex and you have to be able to walk in their shoes to fully understand a situation and, rather than just prescribing, helping to come up with pragmatic solutions to complex situations.

Day by day, you’ll act as a connector to all parts of the business, providing dedicated Health & Safety support to Generation & Trading (our power stations) and Retail (our contact centres and customer-facing teams). You’ll be independent, involved, informed and informative; run learning teams, collate reporting, and help pull Board papers together. Rather than looking through the lens of avoiding accidents, you’ll take the time to understand what it is within the DNA of a business that creates a successful workplace, and take a considered, human-centred approach to keep us there.

Ko wai koe | About you

You’ll be seen as the subject matter expert on all things Health & Safety and the go-to for support and advice on H&S matters for our kaimahi, service providers and contractors, so it’s essential you have sound knowledge of New Zealand H&S legislation and its practical application (ideally in heavy industry), but also the ability to see beyond that, to understand and appreciate how our front-line workers manage risk and goal conflicts at the work fronts to be successful in their mahi.

This is a senior role, so ideally you would have worked at a senior level before, with the appropriate qualifications and registrations and plenty of mahi under your belt doing H&S that goes beyond box-ticking and drives real change in human behaviour. A renowned communicator, you can clearly convey complex information to a variety of audiences, with presentation skills on point, high EQ, and great listening skills. You’ll need great writing skills to pull Board papers together, and as you’ll present from time to time, participate in Exec committees, and run learning teams, facilitation experience would be great (but not a must-have).

We support our people to work how, where and when works the best. To get the most out of this role, there’s a real advantage to being based near one of our sites or offices in Taranaki, Taupō, Clyde, Auckland or Wellington, however this role can be fully remote and we’re open to applications from all over Aotearoa.
