As a BIW Project Resident Engineer, you will act as the key technical liaison between the supplier and the OEM to ensure smooth integration of Body-in-White (BIW) components. You will be responsible for managing engineering changes, troubleshooting manufacturing issues, and ensuring that BIW parts meet quality, cost, and timing requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the on-site representative for BIW engineering at the OEM or supplier location.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for BIW components and assemblies in development and production.
- Coordinate between design, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve issues quickly.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with BIW performance requirements (crash, NVH, durability, weight, cost, and manufacturability).
- Track and manage engineering changes (ECNs, ECRs, PCNs) to maintain project timing and cost control.
- Work closely with suppliers, tooling, and process engineers to ensure feasibility and manufacturability of BIW parts.
- Support prototype builds, testing, and validation activities, ensuring timely resolution of issues.
- Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, and problem-solving activities.
- Lead BIW part fit, finish, and dimensional validation efforts in production.
- Ensure all deliverables meet automotive standards and regulations (Euro NCAP, FMVSS, VDA, ISO).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in BIW engineering within the automotive industry.
- Strong knowledge of BIW manufacturing processes (stamping, welding, adhesive bonding, riveting, etc.).
- Experience working at an OEM or Tier 1 supplier in a resident engineering role.
- Familiarity with CAD software (CATIA V5, Siemens NX) and PLM tools (Teamcenter, Enovia).
- Strong understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) & DFA (Design for Assembly).
- Ability to troubleshoot BIW fit, finish, dimensional, and structural performance issues.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to travel and work on-site at the OEM/supplier location.
- Experience with Electric Vehicle (EV) BIW structures desired.
- Knowledge of composite and aluminium BIW technologies desired.
- Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, and quality processes desired.
- Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing experience desired.
