Commercial Director

About us

Fulkers Bailey Russell are a dynamic, growth-focused construction consultancy, with a focus not only on our projects but our impact and our people too. We are looking for a Commercial Director to join our Residential Sector - join us as we continue an exciting period of growth and change.

Why Fulkers Bailey Russell?

We are a Construction Consultancy that's big enough to handle the most challenging and exciting projects, yet small enough to foster a culture of genuine care for our employees – our 'Fulkers people'. We pride ourselves on a foundation built by our friendly, supportive, professional, and ambitious people, infusing these values into everything we do.

About the role - Commercial Director

Our Commercial Directors are technical specialists and role models for our Quantity Surveyors, with a dual purpose. The first is the delivery of the most challenging and complex projects as the principal quantity surveying lead, meeting the needs of the clients and our delivery teams whilst delivering the right profitability targets for Fulkers.

The second is to ensure the successful performance of the quantity surveying talent within their sector and across the business - mentor, coach, train and provide guidance, along with managing resource planning and project requirements whilst being on hand to mitigate technical escalations.

What does the role involve?

  • Leading the day-to-day delivery of larger, more complex, or challenging projects requiring Quantity Surveying support and share your knowledge and experience gained with the wider team for learning.
  • Supporting the leaders within your sector in resource planning, allocation and hiring to make sure we have the right Quantity Surveying talent, in the right place at the right time to deliver for our clients.
  • Reviewing any and all key project documentation in your field before they are issued to clients, to keep consistency and high standards, spotting any inaccuracies and guiding staff through their rectification for learning.
  • Working in conjunction with the Managing Director and Client Directors on strategy generation and implementation wherever your specialist skills are required to better facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach or if it is specifically Quantity Surveying.
  • Providing leadership guidance on utilisation of Quantity Surveying resources for new projects as well as across existing projects, using your expert knowledge within the field to monitor utilisation, assess efficiency, identify issues and make recommendations for improvements and optimisation.
  • Acting as primary commercial/quantity surveying contact for key clients and Client Directors, providing service delivery and establishing yourself as a key stakeholder and the first point of contact for commercial Quantity Surveying expertise at the most senior level.
  • Collaborating with the Managing Director and Client Directors to secure new business/clients as well as new opportunities within existing clients; this will require an understanding of the capabilities of the other disciplines in the sector.
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement of people, processes, and systems relating to your discipline to aid in the growth and evolution of the business in line with market/client needs
  • Acting as an expert and specialist role model for all quantity surveyors while leading them on projects.
  • Demonstrating best practise, constantly optimising, and adhering to governance and policies whilst embedding an attitude of wider business collaboration, to instil the right behaviours.
  • Always take personal responsibility for the health and safety of self and others by working within the Health and Safety policy and procedures.
  • Endeavour to improve our social and environmental impact.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required of the role.
  • Fully Chartered Accreditation alongside 10 years plus senior experience within Quantity Surveying.
  • Demonstrate a wide range of relevant experience working within the construction industry and sound construction commercial awareness, and procurement procedures.
  • Commercial leadership within the construction industry, managing clients and complex projects, demonstrating sound construction knowledge and commercial awareness.
  • Owning financial and commercial metrics for construction projects, people and profit.
  • Project delivery including resourcing, performance and completion.
  • Demonstratable success of developing business opportunities with new and existing clients
  • Managing high value and complex projects
  • Mentoring, coaching and nurturing the professional development of quantity surveying talent
  • Experience creating/implementing strategy both overall business and client focused
