Position Summary
Glide Memorial Church is a vibrant and inclusive spiritual center that uses the transformative power of art and liturgy to create meaningful worship experiences. The Arts and Liturgy Ministry Coordinator will be responsible for integrating various forms of art into the life of the church, curating worship experiences that inspire and elevate, and overseeing the look and feel of Sunday Celebrations. This role also encompasses designing art exhibits, installations, and coordinating arts and lecture-style events that engage the congregation and the broader community. This individual will work closely with the church team to bring a cohesive, creative, and spiritually enriching aesthetic to all aspects of worship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Worship Design and Coordination: Collaborate with the Minister of Celebration and other church team members to design Sunday Celebrations that incorporate visual, musical, and performative arts. Ensure that every worship service is spiritually resonant, aesthetically cohesive, and transformative.
- Art Exhibits and Installations: Lead the creation, curation, and installation of visual art projects, exhibits, and sacred art spaces that inspire reflection and spiritual connection. Collaborate with artists from both the congregation and the wider community.
- Arts and Lecture Events: Plan and coordinate events such as art lectures, performances, and artist talks that align with the church’s mission of justice, creativity, and healing. Develop programming that fosters dialogue around faith, art, and social transformation.
- Aesthetic Leadership for Worship: Oversee the visual, sensory, and environmental elements of Sunday Celebrations and special services, including stage design, lighting, visual media, and overall decor. Ensure that all artistic components align with the vision and values of Glide Memorial Church.
- Collaboration Across Artistic Teams: Serve as a creative liaison between the worship teams, musicians, dancers, spoken word artists, and visual artists, ensuring that all elements are integrated into a unified worship experience.
- Spiritual and Creative Leadership: Curate services and events that deepen the congregation’s spiritual journey, helping the community engage with worship through creativity, art, and sacred practices.
- Project and Event Management: Plan and execute large-scale art and worship projects, managing timelines, budgets, and logistics to ensure successful implementation of all creative endeavors.
- Community Engagement and Outreach: Build partnerships with local artists and organizations, inviting diverse voices into the church’s creative and worship life. Act as a cultural ambassador for the church, promoting the arts as a tool for healing and transformation.
Minimum Qualifications: - 3+ years of experience in arts curation, worship planning, or faith-based creative work.
- BA degree in Fine Arts, Theology, Liturgical Studies, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience in the arts or non-profit sector, with a record of successful program development and collaborative team management.
- Strong vision and innovative mindset for using creative expression to enhance worship, foster community engagement, and inspire spiritual reflection.
- Deep commitment to the mission, values, and philosophy of Glide Memorial Church, with a passion for social justice and community engagement.
- Proven experience in liturgical arts, worship planning, and artistic curation within a faith-based or creative setting, demonstrating an ability to create engaging and meaningful worship experiences.
- Robust project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple, complex projects simultaneously and coordinate diverse teams of artists, musicians, and volunteers.
- Expertise in visual and performing arts, with hands-on experience in art installations, exhibit curation, or other creative expressions within worship contexts.
- Outstanding stewardship and relationship-management skills, with meticulous follow-through and a track record of nurturing partnerships and managing stakeholder relationships.
- Knowledge of the Bay Area’s arts and philanthropic landscape, with experience connecting with funders and communities aligned with Glide’s mission and values.
- Exceptional communication skills across visual, verbal, and written platforms, with the ability to convey the church’s mission through various forms of media.
- Advanced proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), WordPress, CMS, and Mac/PC platforms, with graphic design experience for creating branded media collateral (photos, videos).
- Demonstrated proficiency with streaming and broadcasting platforms (Ecamm, Zoom, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for reaching and engaging wider audiences.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data and qualitative insights to inform effective strategies for engaging and growing faith-based arts audiences.
- Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and provide on-site support for special worship services and arts-based events.
Work Environment: - GLIDE’s buildings are located in the Tenderloin neighborhood.
- GLIDE maintains an "open door" policy to the community and its clients, who frequently enter and leave the building.
$30 - $32 an hour
This is a part-time (20 hours/week) Non-Exempt position. This role is covered by the collective bargaining agreement.
