Environmental, Health, and Safety Coordinator

Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.

A core tenet at Hermeus is “safety over progress, progress over process.” With that in mind, Hermeus is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Coordinator with 3-5 years of experience, including a background in the aerospace industry. This role is based in our Atlanta, GA office, with up to 33% travel to various facilities. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) or a related field and possess experience in the aerospace or manufacturing sectors, focusing on safety and compliance in high-risk industries. The EHS Coordinator will ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory compliance while fostering a culture of safety within the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs and policies that comply with federal, state, and local regulations, with a focus on the aerospace, engines, and fuel tank sectors.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards in aerospace manufacturing environments, engine assembly, and fuel tank operations. Recommend corrective actions and ensure safe working conditions.
  • Track and report EHS performance metrics, including accident reports, near misses, and regulatory inspections, with a focus on the aerospace industry’s unique safety requirements.
  • Provide specialized EHS training for employees in aerospace manufacturing, engine testing and fuel tank maintenance to ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
  • Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, or safety violations, particularly in aerospace-related manufacturing processes, and prepare reports with recommendations for improvement.
  • Stay updated on EHS regulations specific to aerospace, engine manufacturing and fuel tank systems to ensure the organization remains compliant with all industry standards and government regulations.
  • Collaborate with managers and site leaders to promote a safety-first culture, ensuring safety protocols are followed in the aerospace and engine manufacturing processes.
  • Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans, particularly for the aerospace sector, including handling hazardous materials, fuel systems, and aviation-specific safety measures.
  • Travel to various company sites to perform audits, inspections, and EHS assessments related to aerospace, and engines, as required.
  • Assist with preparation for regulatory inspections and audits, ensuring timely and accurate reporting for aerospace-related safety standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in an EHS coordination role, with a focus on aerospace, engine manufacturing, or fuel tank systems.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, aerospace manufacturing safety standards, and environmental laws related to the aerospace and engine industries.
  • Experience working with or in aerospace production environments, engine assembly, and fuel tank systems is desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex EHS information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and highly regulated environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify safety hazards and implement effective solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to travel up to 33% of the time, including overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., Certified Safety Professional - CSP, Associate Safety Professional - ASP).
  • Experience with hazardous material handling, aviation safety, and fuel tank systems.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Forklift trainer certification.
  • Indoor air quality (IH) experience.
