Job Description

This position is still at the proposal stage and is awaiting award.

This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program.  The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below: 

International SOS is looking for an individual who is an experienced General Surgeon to perform surgical procedures to treat a variety of conditions affecting the abdomen, digestive tract, breast, skin, and soft tissues. This role involves diagnosing surgical issues, developing treatment plans, and managing pre- and post-operative care to optimize patient outcomes. 

Key Responsibilities

Scope of Care: Contractor’s physician(s) shall be responsible for providing GENERAL SURGERY Physician care, including, but not limited to:  

  • Clinic Responsibilities: Contractor physician(s) shall be present on time for any scheduled clinics/surgeries start times as documented by physical presence in the clinic or OR at the scheduled start time.  
  • Communication of Test Results: Mechanisms must be in-place to provide notification of test results for patients receiving care in accordance with VHA Directive 1088, Communicating Test Results to Providers and Patients.  
  • Medications: Contractor’s physician(s) shall follow all established medication policies and procedures. No sample medications shall be provided to patients.  
  • Discharge education: Provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all GENERAL SURGERY clinical or surgical patients.  
  • Consultation and Referral Responsibilities: Contractor’s physician(s) shall provide consultation with and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures so that the most expeditious and clinically appropriate work-up can be done. Contractor’s physician(s) shall determine the appropriate course of treatment and communicate in person or by phone with the referring clinicians.  
  • Inpatient Admissions: Contractor’s physician(s) shall review any surgical admission(s) to inpatient hospital care recommended by Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner). Every admission to inpatient care shall have a person-to-person hand-off/hand-over from the admitting Provider to a responsible member of the admitting team. 
  • Comply with the 5 U.S.C.552a (Privacy Act), 38 U.S.C. 5701 (Confidentiality of claimants records), 5 U.S.C. 552 (FOIA), 38 U.S.C. 5705 (Confidentiality of Medical Quality Assurance Records) 38 U.S.C. 7332 (Confidentiality of certain medical records), Title 5 U.S.C. § 522a (Records Maintained on Individuals) as well as 45 C.F.R. Parts 160, 162, and 164 (HIPAA).  
  • Ensure that all records pertaining to medical care and services provided to VA patients are captured in the VA electronic health record system as required by VA policy as discussed in 4.4.4.  
  • Appropriately document in medical records in accordance with standard commercial practice and guidelines established by VHA Directive 1907.01 Health Information Management and Health Records and all guidelines provided by the facility.  
  • Follow policies and standards as defined but not limited to Privacy Act requirements. 
  • Provide an academic environment conducive to the training and professional development of HPTs rotating through the General Surgery Service in accordance with current VA, accrediting agency, and JC equivalent compliance guidelines.  
  • Meet the educational objectives of the training program as outlined in the program letter of agreement. 
  • May provide practice-based learning opportunities and/or didactic teaching to HPTs.  
  • Provide supervision of HPTs in accordance with current VA, accrediting agency, and JC equivalent compliance guidelines.  
  • Ensure HPT supervision in accordance with VHA Directive 1400.01, Supervision of Physician, Dental, Optometry, Chiropractic, and Podiatry Residents, and VHA Handbook 1400.04, Supervision of Associated Health Trainees.  
  • Be responsible for overseeing HPTs’ acquisition and demonstration of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professionalism while the HPT participates in patient care.  
  • Be responsible for periodic evaluation of HPTs and the training program as required by accrediting agencies and program letters of agreement.  
  • Ensure that all notes and encounters are completed, clearly demonstrate the involvement of the supervising practitioner, and comply with VA standards, equivalent to JC compliance guidelines, standard commercial practice and guidelines established by VHA Directive 1400.01 and VHA Handbook 1400.04.  
  • Perform any administrative duties relative to documentation of HPT training, as required and directed by the VA COS or designated representative. 
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation as required by the facility Chief of Service, COS, or designee. 
  • Attend staff meetings as required by the facility Chief of Service, COS, or designee. 
  • Complete the appropriate QM/PI documentation pertaining to all procedures, complications, and outcome of examinations. 
  • Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care. Contractor’s physician(s) shall make every effort to prevent medication errors, falls, and patient injury caused by acts of commission or omission in the delivery of care.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements/Certifications:  

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a physician from any US State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. 
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. 

Education Required: 

  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. 
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Surgery. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. 
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. 
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs. 

Other Special Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate. 
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required. 
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
