Position: Knowledge & Communications Fellow, Mayors Migration Council 

Status: Part time (25 hours/week) 

Location: New York City with a hybrid schedule  

BACKGROUND 

The Mayors Migration Council (MMC) is a mayor-led coalition that accelerates ambitious global action on migration and displacement. With most of the world’s migrants and displaced people living in cities, our mission is to use the power of city diplomacy and city practice to create a world where urban migrants, displaced people, and receiving communities can thrive. 

To achieve our mission, we provide mayors with advocacy, coordination, and communications support to influence policy decisions at the national and international level, and connect city governments to the knowledge, technical, and financial resources they need to accelerate and scale local solutions. 

Created by mayors for mayors, we are a nimble team of political advisors and urban practitioners guided by a Leadership Board of global city leaders, including the Mayors of Amman, Bogotá, Freetown, Kampala, Kuala Lumpur, Milan, Montréal, San Antonio, and Zürich. We are managed as a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and operate with the institutional support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the IKEA Foundation, the Open Society Foundations, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, in addition to other donors. 

FELLOWSHIP  

The Mayors Migration Council (MMC) is looking for a driven, research-inclined writer with tech-savvy skills to be a Knowledge & Communications Fellow. The Fellow will support the expansion of the MMC’s knowledge base, the impact of its storytelling, and the efficacy of its knowledge and communications tools. Managed by the Knowledge & Impact Manager, the Fellow will also work closely with the Communications Manager to support the creation and dissemination of research and communications products that promote positive narratives of urban migrants and refugees.  

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Core Tasks 

• Support Knowledge & Impact Manager in producing high-quality research briefs by drafting content, fact checking, conducting supplementary research, formatting citations, aligning knowledge products with branding guidelines, etc. Research topics will focus on the intersection of urban migration with MMC thematic priorities such as economic inclusion, climate change, and/or housing.  
• Maintain internal MMC Knowledge Library by updating data repositories and writing resource syntheses to create connections to MMC’s thematic priorities. 
• Copyedit key knowledge and communications products. 
• Create a brief style guide to capture MMC’s standards of writing and formatting to ensure consistency across knowledge products. 
• Create digestible impact stories for the MMC website by distilling complex knowledge from technical reports, grant reports, city-to-city exchanges, etc., into easy-to-understand narratives of change. 
• Map the MMC website structure and content to identify gaps and outdated information, and make updates to improve accuracy and usability. 
• Support Knowledge & Impact Manager in updating our M&E tracker(s) as needed and draw on these insights to update website visuals. 

 ​Secondary Tasks  

• Work on special knowledge and communications projects.  
• Provide operations and administrative assistance, including note-taking at quarterly strategic reviews, city leads meetings, city comms task team meetings, K&C sync meetings, etc. 
• Generate regular metrics reports to assess the productivity of web-based activities.  

The Fellow will also have opportunities to host a “Lunch and Learn” presentation to the MMC team; connect with other teams at MMC to learn about their work; and participate in all-staff meetings and events as relevant. 

• Available to work for 12 weeks from June 10th to August 28th.
• Strong research, synthesis, and storytelling skills, with preference for coursework or experience in migration, public policy, international relations, or similar. 
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly distill complex ideas into concise, impactful takeaways. 
• Ability to collaborate effectively. 
• Interest or experience in social media (e.g., LinkedIn, X, and Facebook), website platforms (e.g., WordPress), and graphic design platforms (e.g., Adobe programs or Canva) is a plus.  
• Ability to organize workflows, prioritize and manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and think critically and creatively. 
• Interest in or demonstrated commitment to the inclusion of migrants and refugees in communities worldwide. 
• English proficiency required – proficiency or fluency in a second language is a plus. 
• Legally authorized to work in the US for the duration of the fellowship. 

Payment: $30/hour. This is a non-exempt position and thus eligible for overtime pay.

• May 19: Final day to accept offer. 
• June 10: Fellowship begins. 
• August 28th: Fellowship concludes.
