OUR ORGANIZATION & TEAM

Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park/Silver Spring (TPSS) is all about our people: 8 staff, 250 clients/year, and 150+ volunteers. We are a small, lively group of dedicated nonprofit professionals, and we work closely to ensure operations run smoothly. As a direct service organization, we work hard, and our work is imbued with shared camaraderie.

THE POSITION

The Deli & Gleaning Manager (DGM) reports to the Executive Director (ED) and works in partnership with the Chef and the Deli Coordinator towards the day-to-day success and long-term growth of our program. The DGM is part-time, salaried, with generous paid time off.

 

The DGM is responsible for the daily deli meal and coordinates our gleaning program. The DGM is supported by and coordinates the efforts of the Deli Coordinator and the volunteers who assist in the kitchen.

 

The DGM is relied upon to complete your responsibilities each day; working closely and collaboratively with colleagues and volunteers as well as independently. You are excited about working at a nonprofit and committed to our mission of delivering delicious meals to our homebound neighbors. You are passionate about preparing great food and you also have administrative and training skills. You take pride in being consistent in your work, you are able to see how pieces and process flows fit together, and you communicate well to support a smooth-running operation. 

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS INCLUDE

The DGM is responsible for the implementation of our deli meals, gleaning program, and other special projects.

·       DELI MEALS. Ensure timely preparation of each day’s deli meal. This means planning meals in advance; ensuring ingredients are onsite, including setting up food orders with Sysco and InstantWhip; preparing the sides; supporting assembly and packing of deli meals.

o   Set up volunteers for success, supporting their training and coordinating their work to ensure deli meals are prepared timely, food for the next day is prepped, and gleaning opportunities are covered. Complete these tasks in the absence of volunteer capacity.

o   Supporting the chef with cleaning dishes, maintain overall cleanliness of kitchen, and ensure safe and sanitary operation of kitchen to meet or exceed Health Department standards.

o   Check in InstantWhip orders on Mondays and Sysco orders on Tuesdays upon arrival; place orders and/or serve as point of contact for designated vendors, such as Oliver.

o   Take a leadership role with building and sustaining a cheerful, welcoming culture. Report needs, questions, and concerns to the ED promptly.

o   Plan deli meals to ensure compliance with County nutrition requirements.

·       GLEANING PROGRAM. Coordinate gleaning program, working closely with volunteers and volunteer coordinators, to ensure coverage and cover any gaps not filled by volunteers. Participate alongside volunteers in gleaning work.

·       SPECIAL PROJECTS. These include: client welcome kits, restaurant partnerships, Fan Club, and other projects that may be assigned. Back up and cover Chef and Deli Coordinator. Other duties that may be assigned include participation in professional development, reflection/review conversations, staff meetings, and occasional driving of routes if needed. Participate in staffing an event booth or table for at least a 2-hour shift three times/year.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

·   High School graduate, or equivalent, with at least three years of experience in group meal preparation, preferably with experience in supervision of volunteers and program management or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·   Program-related education and training may be required and will be paid by Meals on Wheels.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, see, hear, walk, handle objects and tools, and reach with arms and hands.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds, and occasionally lift or move objects up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.   

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS.  Starting compensation depends on education and experience with growth potential; benefits including paid vacation starting at 3 weeks, 10 days paid sick leave, paid child sick & dependent family leave, FMLA equivalent and other types of leave, professional development and growth opportunities, and more per the Staff Handbook.
