We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or who are members of other communities who are currently underrepresented in our workforce. All qualified applicants will be afforded equal employment opportunities without discrimination because of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, disability or marital status. We know a diverse workforce will enable us to understand drivers behind targeted violence and online harms in an in-depth way and do better work to counter them.

About the role:

Do you have a genuine interest in working for an organization tackling online harms - from targeted violence and human trafficking to gender-based violence and child online exploitation? Do you have experience working in this sector or related sectors and want to develop further?

Moonshot is looking for a Project Manager to join our team and support our research and analysis efforts related to targeted violence and other online harms. This role is ideal for someone with experience in managing programs or projects in the public safety, security, or research sectors.

In this role, you will help coordinate and manage a range of research and intelligence analysis activities focused on identifying emerging trends in targeted violence. You will oversee the execution of long-term research projects and the development of journal articles and public reports.

Moonshot’s offices are based in Washington, DC. We offer flexible work options, including hybrid and remote. Candidates from across the US will be considered. If based outside of Washington, DC, occasional travel to Washington, DC may be required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading a project team conducting research into targeted violence-related threats in the United States. Specifically, exploring how we might be able to distinguish between online behavior demonstrating a belief that violence is justified or glorifying violence and mobilization behavior. Working with sub-contractors, including an academic institution, to coordinate data collection and research in support of the project, as well as collaboratively developing outputs such as peer-reviewed journal articles and briefings for the client and interested partners in the targeted violence prevention space.
  • Leading a team to analyze various data sources, such as social media metrics, surveys, interviews, primary source targeted violence data, and data from our in-house tools, to track and understand online targeted violence activity.
  • Contributing to creating research products that meet high standards for quality, ensuring insights are clear, concise, and actionable for clients.
  • Assisting with briefings and presentations to share findings and insights with clients, policymakers, practitioners, and the public.
  • Coordinating and supporting research projects, ensuring that timelines are met and that work is completed in alignment with project goals and budgets.
  • Managing key relationships with clients, partner organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitoring and managing risks associated with projects to ensure smooth and successful delivery.
  • Leading a small to medium-sized project team.
  • Contributing to business development efforts by identifying potential funding opportunities and helping to build and strengthen relationships with clients and partners.

Essential:

  • Experience or strong interest in working on targeted violence or related areas.
  • Experience leading the design and implementation of research projects on terrorism and/or targeted violence.
  • Basic understanding of open-source intelligence (OSINT): Familiarity with OSINT methods and tools.
  • Experience in quantitative methods for social science and specialist quantitative skills, including open source intelligence tools, data visualization, database management (SQL), Python, Tableau visualization, or other data analysis toolsets.
  • Experience in qualitative methods such as content analysis and taxonomy development.
  • Experience in communication and stakeholder engagement: Ability to contribute to or support public speaking, briefings, and meetings with stakeholders.
  • Proven and demonstrable project management experience.
  • Strong communication skills: Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing, speaking, and in interpersonal interactions.
  • Ability to work under pressure: Comfortable managing multiple tasks, prioritizing effectively, and maintaining quality work under tight deadlines.
  • In addition, we require and will check on candidates' eligibility to work in the US. Candidates will be expected to undertake and pass any relevant security clearance procedures per clients' needs.

Desirable:

  • Subject matter expertise in one of the following areas: hate crimes or targeted violence.
  • Fluency in languages other than English.
  • Experience conducting practice-relevant research and tailoring and sharing research findings for practitioners.

Benefits package:
