Porter is hiring a Payroll Specialist for a remote position!
Who You Are
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for processing and managing the payroll for our employees across multiple states, ensuring accurate and timely compensation, and maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. You will work closely with HR, Finance, and other departments to ensure smooth payroll operations.
What You'll Do
Process and calculate payrolls for full-time employees and 1099 contractors across multiple states, ensuring accuracy and compliance with each state’s specific payroll tax laws, wage laws, and regulations.
Apply appropriate tax rates, deductions, and withholding to employees based on their work location(s), including state and local tax requirements.
Ensure accurate and timely submission of payroll taxes for federal, state, and local jurisdictions for both employees and contractors.
File necessary tax documents (e.g., quarterly filings, annual tax returns) and ensure compliance with applicable payroll laws in multiple states.
Stay updated on changing state-specific tax laws and ensure timely adjustments to payroll processes as necessary.
Maintain up-to-date employee records, including payment history, tax withholding forms, direct deposit details, and benefit deductions.
Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll issues, including wage discrepancies, deductions, and tax information.
Collaborate with HR and finance teams to ensure accurate record-keeping of employee benefits, time off, and deductions.
Maintain confidential payroll information and always ensure its security.
Assist with audits or internal reviews related to payroll data and processes.
What You'll Need
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in accounting, finance, or related field
Proven experience in payroll processing (2-3 years preferred)
Familiarity with payroll tax laws and withholding requirement in multiple states, including experience with both full time employee and 1099 contractor payroll processing.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local tax codes, and the ability to apply them accurately in payroll processing.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to keep all company-sensitive documents and systems secure.
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Non-Negotiables:
· Reside in or near the Maryland border - Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC
· Be willing to travel to the CFO's home in Maryland on occasion to work together
