Job Title: Assistant Vice President (Operations)

Job Type: Full-Time; 24/7 Emergency Response

Salary: Up to $150K (Depending on Experience)

Location: Richmond, VA

Basic Function:


The Assistant Vice President (Operations) is responsible for overseeing and managing operational, technical, and administrative activities within a designated region or territory. This role involves leading and collaborating with Division Managers to ensure the efficient delivery of services, quality control, project management, equipment allocation, and enhancing client relationships. The AVP (Operations) ensures that all activities are performed in a safe, professional, and efficient manner, safeguarding both employees and company assets.


Vision and Leadership:
  • Share the “future” vision and strategic objectives with assigned divisions/region/territory managers.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment through leadership by example.


Goal Management:
  • Work closely with division management to meet established goals, ensuring clear expectations are set and providing relevant feedback.


Budgeting and Cost Management:
  • Oversee division management's review of expenditures to maintain cost-effective procurement.
  • Assist in budgeting, P&L, and research for capital expenditure requests.


Team Collaboration:
  • Meet regularly with Division Managers/Assistant Division Managers to plan, problem-solve, and conduct reviews.
  • Represent the company at pre-bid meetings and collaborate with other executives for bids/quotes.


Project and Work Management:
  • Review bids/quotes for accuracy in estimates, labor, and equipment allocation.
  • Ensure subcontractor proposals meet quality and service delivery standards.


Customer and Regulatory Relations:
  • Support Division Managers on high-profile jobs, ensuring customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance.
  • Address customer concerns and ensure corrective actions are implemented when needed.


Leadership Development:
  • Identify and mentor future leaders for succession planning within divisions.
  • Foster a supportive work environment, maintaining an open-door policy and promoting positive communication.


Safety and Risk Management:
  • Demonstrate and enforce the company’s safety policies.
  • Ensure corrective actions are taken for safety violations.


Continuous Improvement:
  • Strive for continuous improvement in both operations and personnel within each assigned division.


Availability:
  • On-call 24/7 for emergency responses with the option to arrange off-call periods with the Vice President.


Additional Duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Travel:
  • Frequent/extended overnight travel required.

Immediate Supervisor’s Title:
  • Vice President


Required Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in the railroad industry, with experience working with Class 1 railroads.
  • Solid knowledge of D.O.T. regulations (including permitting for overweight and oversized loads) and FRA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to align with company culture and values.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and achieve results.
  • Competency in conflict and crisis management, with the ability to analyze situations, identify problems, and creatively solve them.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software as required.
  • Valid driver's license and a preference for Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Must pass qualification tests (ERail Safe, safety programs, etc.) and be available to respond to emergencies at any time, including weekends and holidays.


Physical Demands:
  • Frequently required to walk on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
  • Must work in all weather conditions and extended hours.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
