Wastewater Treatment Manager - Industrial

RahrBSG is looking for a Wastewater Treatment Manager to join our team. The Wastewater Treatment Manager oversees and performs various tasks necessary to operate, maintain, repair, and ensure compliance with Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) permits for the onsite wastewater treatment facility at the malting campus in Shakopee, MN. These duties include plant operation (sequencing batch reactor, SBR, and membrane bioreactor, MBR), sample collection, sludge processing, equipment operation and maintenance, process control, troubleshooting of the treatment process and equipment, and partnering with third party contractors on hauling solids and ongoing compliance requirements. The Wastewater Treatment Manager is responsible for implementing best practices to optimize the facility’s performance as well as maintaining the company’s water quality trading agreement to offset pollutants to the Minnesota River.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operational Management and Execution 
  • Oversee daily operations of the wastewater treatment facility, including monitoring treatment processes, equipment, and system performance. 
  • Lead and actively perform the treatment process, including sample collection, sample analysis, chemical adjustments, and equipment inspections. This could include working with valves, pumps, motors, electronics, and manufacturing systems, including SCADA and internal systems such as FactoryTalk.
  • Manage and train wastewater treatment operators and onsite operational partners, ensuring proper safety protocols and operational procedures are followed. 
  • Ensures team success through ongoing coaching, development, recognition, open and honest communication, and an overall engaging environment. 
  • Carefully monitor and assist in the collection of samples of wastewater and biosolids.
  • Perform field/laboratory tests and analysis to identify chemical, physical, and/or biological characteristics of wastewater.
  • Manage the facility’s operational budget, procure necessary chemicals and supplies, and track expenditures. 
  • Regulatory Compliance 
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, including MPCA permits, local discharge limits, and reporting requirements. 
  • Maintain accurate records of treatment performance, chemical usage, flow rates, and discharge monitoring. Prepare and submit required reports as needed in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements.
  • Gather and record data from plant charts, gauges, and other instruments. Utilize this data to perform calculations necessary to ensure efficient and proper plant operations.
  • Process Optimization and Maintenance  
  • Analyze the biosolids removal process and land applications, prioritizing optimization to improve efficiency and compliance. 
  • Monitor SBR and MBR operations, making necessary control adjustments to ensure proper operation of the facility.
  • Operate necessary equipment, such as a forklift, to assist with the operational needs of the facility. 
  • Maintain and repair equipment. 
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for all wastewater treatment equipment and infrastructure. Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains. 
  • Safety and Environmental Standards 
  • Enforce and adhere to safety procedures and environmental best practices that align with OSHA, State, City, and Company guidelines for developing and maintaining a safe work environment.  
  • Develop and implement emergency response procedures for system failures, spills, and compliance deviations. Respond to onsite alarms as needed. 
  • Continuous Improvement and Collaboration 
  • Collaborate with operational management, engineering, EHS, and regulatory agencies to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities. 
  • Partner with leadership on annual budget planning to efficiently allocate capital to achieve operational goals. 
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the company and its operational needs.  


MINIMUM EDUCATION & WORK REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations, preferably in an industrial or food processing environment.  
  • Valid Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), Class A, wastewater license required and completion of required continuing education necessary to keep all licenses and certifications up to date.  
  • Valid MN Driver's License with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record. 
  • Basic knowledge of computers, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with proficiency in using Excel for calculations and reporting requirements.   
  • Technical proficiency in SCADA and manufacturing software such as FactoryTalk.  
  • Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergencies as needed.  


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment/collection process and the operation, maintenance, and repair of related equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and comprehend operational and regulatory plans, policies, and related documents.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that demands a passion for work, attention to detail, and ability to produce results. 
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with operational team members at varying levels. 
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with proven experience in mechanical and/or electrical troubleshooting. 
  • Strong problem solver that can identify and resolve problems in a timely manner by gathering and analyzing information skillfully, developing alternative solutions, and using analytical reasoning skills to drive groups to a successful solution. 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals used in the treatment process.
  • Occasionally manually lifts parts, equipment, and other objects between 20 – 50 lbs.
  • Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and use ladders/stairs.
  • Work environment includes outdoor work in all weather conditions, and occasionally works in adverse conditions such as extreme weather, at heights, and confined spaces.
