Senior Model Engineer

The Model Engineering team is responsible for developing, implementing and productionising large-scale models and simulations used in our customer projects. These models are predominantly agent-based and encode real-life systems and behaviours, allowing our customers to understand complex problems and explore different scenarios. Depending on your experience and preferences, you may be working on:

> Developing new agent-based models for large, complex simulations of cities and social systems.

> Productionising prototype models to ensure they run reliably and efficiently at scale, often faster-than-real-time or near real-time conditions.

> Integrating data engineering best practices into our workflows, ensuring that vast amounts of incoming and simulated data are properly processed, analysed, and stored.

• Software Skills:
• Proven Experience writing production quality code and adhering to software best practices, 
• Strong proficiency in Python is required
• Proficiency with C++ is a strong advantage

• Modelling & Simulation Knowledge:
• Familiarity with (or strong curiosity towards) mathematical modelling paradigms (e.g. systems dynamics, event-based modelling, agent-based modelling) and associated simulation tools.

• Performance & Scalability Focus:
• Ability to profile, optimise, and scale computational models, whether through parallelisation, efficient data structures, or distributed computing frameworks.
• Comfort with distributed computing environments, concurrency, or cluster orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).

• Data Engineering Experience:
• Experience using Kafka (or similar) to develop real-time data streaming pipelines is desirable
• Hands-on expertise in data engineering principles to generate insights from large data sets, simulation outputs, or real-time streams is a plus.

• DevOps & Containerisation:
• Experience with using Kubernetes to automate the deployment of containerised applications.
• Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring/logging tools is a plus.

• Productionising Simulation Models, working closely with Applied Scientist colleagues to take models from the prototype stage through to production ready software.
• Developing and Implementing computational models.
• Build or refine large-scale agent-based models incorporating real-world data and complex behaviours performance optimisation.
•  Measure, track, and continuously improve model performance, ensuring simulations can handle new levels of complexity and larger-scale scenarios.
• Develop tooling that helps model developers optimise workflows and streamline simulation analysis.
• Data Engineering - building pipelines to extract, synthesise and integrate data from a large number of sources.
• Generating insights from massive data-sets and simulation outputs.
• Generalising and extending existing models - Identifying and implementing generalisations and abstractions of existing models so that new models and new geographical areas of interest can be created easily.
