Job Title: Exceptional Education Coordinator

Reports To: Chief of School

FLSA Status: Exempt 

Starting Salary: $60,000


Position Overview:  The Special Education Coordinator will serve as the network lead for services to students with disabilities (special education and 504) across the STEM Preparatory Academy(STEM). The Special Education Coordinator ensures that STEM Operators adhere to federal and state legal requirements regarding Special Education/504, homebound, and IDEA programs through monitoring, training, and support. The Special Education Coordinator is the point person for district/state communications regarding special education/504 programming, compliance, and impact on student learning. The Special Education Coordinator will also serve as an administrator for PULSE, the student information management system, and support building level exceptional education teachers with compliance requirements.


The Special Education Coordinator will conduct annual district monitoring (audits, document collection, and data review), as well as complete special projects that promote student education access and equity rights, under the direction of the Chief of Schools.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field; Master’s degree from an accredited university, highly preferred.
  • +3 to 5 years of outstanding performance as a lead teacher, supporting student outcomes that exceed district and state performance in Special Education setting Knowledge of IDEA/Students with Disabilities/504 federal, state, and local law and programmatic grant requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Anti Racism, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
  • Experience as a teacher leader, department leader, or equivalent experience leading and collaborating with adults
  • Feels confident, compelled, and proactive in creating, monitoring, and evaluating action plans Proven track record of family and community collaborations that drive strong student outcomes and results

Specific Position Responsibilities:

Guidance and Support
  • Ensure equitable service to and treatment of students with disabilities by serving as the LEA point of contact for identified special education programmatic requirements, including hosting monthly district-wide trainings to support district-wide programs
  • Ensure equitable service to and treatment of students eligible for 504 plans in collaboration with Dean’s of Students or Assistant Principal 
  • Ensure equitable service to and treatment of students eligible for Homebound services options by serving as the LEA lead for all programmatic requirements, including hosting district-wide trainings to support STEM school programs


Compliance Monitoring
  • Implement a monitoring plan for programmatic grant/legal compliance and school accountability for service to students with disabilities, 504 plans, and homebound services through monthly audits, document collection, data review, and school communication regarding compliance status.
  • Work closely with the Chief of School and Chief Financial Officer to ensure monitoring issues are resolved and all plan submissions comply with ESSA, Perkins, and IDEA requirements.
  • Lead, monitor, and document the continuum of services for Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS) student referrals and facilitate the process at all levels to ensure timely process completion.
  • Prepare and distribute timely programmatic performance reports to  networks, MNPS, the Tennessee Department of Education, and external partners.
  • Coordinate district and network responses to federal, state, and grant expectations and post-monitoring actions required.


Student Information Management
  • Serving as the administrator for PULSE, responsible for quarterly training on the effective use of the tool.
  •  In partnership with the Network Team, analyze and report Special Education data implications and opportunities to school, charter network, district, and state stakeholders to inform high-quality school programs.
  • Complete annual reports for MNPS and TDOE requiring data pulls from PULSE. 
  • Other duties as assigned.


Other Responsibilities: Instructional Planning
  • In partnership with the Chief of School and the Network Academic Team, develop and facilitate the school’s model and strategy for academic growth and different pathways for students.
  • Organizes, partners, and oversees leader and teacher professional development in alignment with the network's universal vision for high-quality instruction and content area curricula
  • Support curricula adaptation and augmentation to ensure students have equitable access to rigorous grade-level content and master both discipline and language knowledge and skill objectives.
  • In alignment with our DEI priorities and aim of becoming an anti-racist institution, lead critical assessment of curricula and standards at all levels.
