Pay Range: $22.90/hr. - $28.62/hr.

Workdays & Hours: Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm; Some evening/weekend work required.

A Fire Fleet Mechanic II job is available with the City of Fort Worth Fire Department Vehicle Services Division. This position performs advanced diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on a wide range of City vehicles and specialized fire equipment, including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and emergency systems. Designs, fabricates, and installs custom components and safety systems, and leads technical training for junior staff. Ensures compliance with safety standards and maintains accurate service records while supporting field operations and fleet management logistics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma/GED with additional specialized training in automotive/mechanical repair and two years’ experience in automotive/truck, construction equipment repair.
  • Valid Texas Class A or B commercial driver’s license or Texas Class B Exempt driver’s license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain mechanic hand tools of type and quantities sufficient to perform with efficiency all required repair duties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess or be able to obtain an Emergency Vehicle Technician F1 & F2 certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Experience working on fire apparatus and/or fire equipment, as well as knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association standards, specifically NFPA 1910, 1932, NFPA 1961, NFPA 1962, NFPA1964 and NFPA 1965.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification.
  • Automotive Service Excellence Certification.

The Fire Fleet Mechanic ll job responsibilities include:

  • Performs inspections, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs on fire trucks, City vehicles, and safety equipment.
  • Repairs gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, drivetrains, suspensions, electrical systems, HVAC, and steering components.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs vehicle-mounted equipment including dump bodies, aerial lifts, light bars, radios, and sirens.
  • Designs, fabricates, and installs specialized emergency lighting and communication systems for fire and emergency vehicles.
  • Welds, cuts, fabricates, and modifies vehicle parts, body panels, and structural components using various metals and techniques.
  • Maintains and repairs brake systems, generators, lighting components, and high-voltage systems; lubricates and replaces worn equipment parts.
  • Completes service records and repair documentation; supports field repairs, inventory control, and vehicle processing.
  • Leads and trains junior mechanics, assists with complex projects, and operates City vehicles for testing, transport, and events.

Physical Demand:

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects
