The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation is recruiting for seasonal positions to work with our 2025 Summer Day Camp, offering Camp Fort Worth and the Mobile Recreation Programs. We are looking for dynamic, experienced, and creative Literacy Support Specialists who enjoy working in a fast-paced environment while encouraging kids to read without fear and to inspire them to work toward reading at grade level and beyond, all while having fun! Camp Fort Worth and Mobile Recreation are Summer Day Camp programs located at 20 community centers and 4 schools throughout the City of Fort Worth. 

Multiple Literacy Support Specialist positions are available with the City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. This position will work up to a maximum of 30 hours weekly (depending on location) at a designated Community Center or Mobile Recreation Camp location. 

The Literacy Program is embedded in Camp Fort Worth and serves children ages 5-12 years. The Program is built on intentional reading instruction for a minimum of 45 minutes daily, focused on the six (6) best practices of reading instruction.  These six (6) best practices are phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and oral language development.

  • Attendance is required at orientation, which is June 2 –6
  • The Camp Fort Worth Program operates June 9 through August 1 and is offered between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • The Mobile Recreation Summer Day Camp Program operates from June 9 through July 25 and is offered between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • The positions will work up to a maximum of 30 hours per week (Seasonal Position with no benefits). 

This Position qualifies for the following incentives which are separate from the base pay:

  • Completion of Assignment Pay. You can earn up to a $300 incentive pay, which is based on the amount of days worked while on assignment. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
  • Six (6) months of teaching experience in a specialty area (reading instruction, early learning, or elementary education).
  • Certification in the specialty area is required.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of classroom experience
  • Strong literacy instruction foundation
  • Experience with children ages 5-12
  • Familiar with Lexia Core5 Reading®
  • Certified through TEA and/or in one of the Basic Core classes such as Math, English, Writing or History
  • ESL knowledge/experience

 The Literacy Support Specialist’s job responsibilities include:

  • Teaches scheduled reading instruction classes and activities to provide educational programming for appropriate age groups.
  • Plans course content and method of presentation; prepares an outline of materials to be covered and submits it for approval to supervisor/coordinator.
  • Selects and assembles materials to be used in teaching assignments and arranges the use of audiovisual equipment or teaching aids.
  • Plans activities for participants directly associated with literacy development.
  • Monitors, collects, tracks, and verifies accurate records for reporting purposes.
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of assigned programs; works with personnel on the continuous improvement of programs and services.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedules as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations.
  • Willing to work in other areas of the program as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with students, parents, program staff, and other Literacy Support Specialists.

Working Conditions:

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions.

Physical Demands:

Sedentary Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met
