Pay Range: $65,563 - $75,397

The Environmental Services Department seeks to hire an experienced Safety Officer to provide technical support in coordinating, developing, and implementing safety programs; provide specialized training and assessments to employees and department operations; perform safety training; and conduct thorough accident investigations and inspections to determine the root causes and prevent occurrences and or recurrence. This involves analyzing data, interviewing witnesses, and identifying areas for improvement in safety protocols or procedures. The Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring employees in the department can work in a safe and secure environment and oversee safety-related programs and training. The candidate must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both oral and written, and should be responsible, dependable, and extremely detail-oriented individual.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in safety management, occupational health and safety, environmental safety, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of safety experience and/or training.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Safety certification (GSP, ASP, SSH, CSHO, SHEP or equivalent)
  • Experience with accident/incident investigations
  • Ability to know, understand, interpret and apply federal, state and local regulations

The Safety Office job responsibilities include:

  • Providing safety training and educational programs to employees to raise awareness about safety protocols, emergency procedures, and the proper use of safety equipment.
  • Identifying potential hazards in the workplace through regular inspections, risk assessments, and audits at each center and inspections.
  • Drafting, updating, and enforcing safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Developing and implementing emergency response plans, conducting drills, and coordinating with external emergency services to ensure the department is prepared to respond effectively to emergencies.
  • Fostering a culture of safety within the organization by encouraging employee participation, recognizing safety achievements, and promoting open communication about safety concerns.
  • Collaborating with management and employee representatives to form safety committees and actively participate in meetings to address safety issues and develop solutions.
  • Respond to and investigate accidents and incidents for corrective actions, and prepare and provide outcome summary reports to the Executive Team.
  • Overseeing the selection, maintenance, and inspection of safety equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, and safety signage.
  • Representative of ENV Serv. in City-wide safety committee meetings and ARB board hearings.
  • Create a list of training throughout the year for the Department staff to comply with.
  • Write safety articles to be produced in the Department’s employee newsletter

Physical Demand

Sedentary Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
