Control Systems Engineer (LabVIEW)

Working arrangements

Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split

Overview

The role of Control Systems Engineer (LabVIEW) is dedicated to advancing our systems that integrate crucial equipment to our live major devices such as ST40, as well as other test rigs and installations. This role demands a deep understanding LabVIEW software development. The Control Systems Engineer will possess good teamworking skills, excellent communication skills and the capability to drive projects to successful completion while liaising with multiple teams and stakeholders.

This position offers significant opportunities for professional development within a cutting-edge engineering environment. As an important member of the team, you will be instrumental in shaping the direction of projects and mentoring junior engineers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Development of software that integrates systems into the plant infrastructure.
  • Software development following defined coding standards and software development processes.
  • Drive the requirements capture and specification generation process for complex projects under your remit.
  • Development of GUIs for systems monitoring and control.
  • Software development of RT systems for data acquisition and control.
  • Reviewing and refactoring existing code.
  • Writing test cases for software.
  • Fault finding and debugging.
  • Produce system specification, end-user and API documentation.
  • Provide expert on-call support for the installation and operation of various control and associated systems.
  • Foster strong relationships with various teams and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.

Essential:

  • Proven expertise in LabVIEW software development.
  • A strong track record in monitoring, data acquisition, systems integration, and control software development.
  • Ability to follow established software development processes and good coding standards.
  • Experience with communications methods and protocols, e.g. TCP, UDP, RS232/485/422, MODBUS, OPC-UA.
  • Software debugging skills.
  • The ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with various stakeholders effectively.

Desirable:

  • CLD, CLA or CLED LabVIEW certification.
  • Industrial or large experiment experience - data acquisition, monitoring, control and integration.
  • Proficiency in LabVIEW RT and FPGA programming.
  • Prior experience in a technical, engineering, or scientific environment.
  • Experience with GIT (preferably gitlab).
  • Database experience (MySQL, MDSplus).
  • Signal electronics skills.
  • UML and other software modelling tools knowledge.
  • Networking expertise (Ethernet, TPC/IP)
  • Experience in designing user interfaces.
  • Linux experience.
  • Knowledge of MQTT and other IoT messaging protocols.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages.
  • Salary dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:

  • Working with ionising radiation.
  • Working with electricity (LV only).
  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields.
