All Williamsburg Learning mentors deliver transformational learning experiences through online live, synchronous classes. All mentors are deeply aligned with Williamsburg Learning’s mission to prepare promising students for meaningful lives as principled leaders and embrace Williamsburg Learning’s educational methods to carry out this mission. A mentor connects deeply with The Williamsburg Curriculum, has a passion for their subject, and possesses the skills necessary to manage a group of students while delivering dynamic instruction.
Roles
All mentors report to a specific Program Leader within the Academics Department, who leads a group of mentors within a particular academic program. The High School Science Mentor would instruct 5 live courses virtually, which would consist of about 35 hours per week. A mentor is accountable for performing the following functions:

Cultivate a hunger for knowledge and encourage curiosity among students.
Encourage students to learn and continually improve.
Teach students “how to learn” not “what to learn.”
Apply the Socratic Method to classroom discussions.
Help set goals for students and work with the class to help them attain these goals.
Become a master in your field. Always be seeking out deeper understanding, knowledge or skills.
Continually find creative ways to communicate your subject area to students. Inspire them to want to learn more!

Keep track of attendance and ensure students are participating in class.
Perform weekly intervention for students who are behind. Monitor student progress and communicate with students and parents. Help students who need workload adjustments.
If working with a TA, follow all of WL’s Teaching Assistant policies and best practices.
Hold a weekly office hour.
Set up and lead Parent/Mentor Conferences (PMCs) with all students.
Attend IEP meetings as requested.
3) Implement TWC with Integrity in Online Format

Design classes around the syllabi objectives and key questions.
Connect with students individually. Demonstrate personal caring and warmth.
Contribute ideas to the improvement of WL’s curriculum.
Secure a substitute according to WL’s substitute policy when necessary.
Adapt WL mentoring practices and TWC to your role and delivery format:
Live-class mentors: Use technology to connect in creative ways. Master the art of virtual classroom management through presentations, discussions, chat, and other forms of participation. Show students that online learning can be personal and human.
Self-paced mentors: Ensure frequent, rapid turnaround on grading and focus your efforts on quality feedback and monitoring student progress.
4) Professional Development and Team Participation
Embrace your role as a mentor, not just a teacher. Work continuously to master the Six Mentor Practices as shared upon initial training and throughout the PD program.
Fully participate in any/all relevant WL Professional Development activities, including weekly PD Huddle on Friday.
Attend all required L10 meetings and participate fully in the agenda, including tracking Scorecard numbers.
Participate in periodic observations and opportunities for feedback from Program Leader and peers.
Demonstrate company values with students, parents, and team members: Make a concerted effort to grow both professionally and personally both inside and outside the Williamsburg community. Serve as a model to students of what it means to live a meaningful life. Practice Right Action, Being a Team Member, and Culture of Belonging.
5) Demonstrate Professionalism during all Classes
Set rules and expectations for classes appropriate to your format (live or online).
Supervise students under your care at all times.
Know and abide by all WL and applicable LAU policies, including the Honor Code, Rules of Engagement, and other policies.
Stay current on all required trainings through SafeSchools.
