We are seeking Substation Structural Engineer to join our Utility Services division in support of a large electric utility substation project. In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating with the client, design and engineering firm, and other stakeholders to review the scope of work, and design submittals, and facilitate the design process from inception to close out.
ResponsibilitiesThe functions of a design project engineer include but are not limited to the following:
- Participate in sponsor kickoff meetings to assist in determining scope of work
- Perform desktop analysis and develop preliminary detailed scope of work
- Request proposals from client design engineering contractors (Prime)
- Review Prime’s proposed engineering project scope and schedule estimates; validate, and make recommendations to client discipline manager/leader
- Review Prime’s requested resource estimates and make recommendations to client discipline leader. Review/Recommend and process the project design specification through DocuSign
- Review purchase order and change order requests in Ariba
- Oversee Prime’s design engineering work including:
- Confirm design is within scope and proceeding according to schedule, establish progress at milestones such as 30%, 60%, 90%
- Provide bi-weekly project status updates through the Smart Turnaround Tool (STT) or other methods, if required by the client group manager/leader
- Provide oversight of Prime’s quality assurance approach related to the Prime’s work products to ensure that design packages are accurate and error free
- Provide cursory reviews (spot check) on final design packages and issue packages to Corporate Drawing Management (CDM)
- Coordinate with other client engineering disciplines and field organizations
- Participate in project status/coordination meetings. Lead project status/coordination meeting when necessary.
- Review invoices submitted by Primes on Ariba. Thoroughly check invoices for accuracy. Provide first approval of invoice on Ariba. Communicate any inconsistencies/errors/concerns of invoices to the client discipline manager/leader before providing approvals
- Provide construction support by interfacing with internal Sthe client employees and contracted construction site representatives. Facilitate requests with the Prime for information or other construction issues.
- For any inconsistencies, concerns, and/or clarification required regarding any of the functions specified in this document, please consult with the client discipline manager/lead for direction
- Arrange and conduct field meetings to review and define work on Civil/Struct/Geotech led projects. Prepare reference materials required for job walks, meeting minutes and send to attendees and other stakeholders.
- Recommend updates to client specifications, standards, and guidelines, if and as encountered. Recommendations shall be made to the client discipline leader.
- Utilize client systems, such as TETRIS for assigned projects (e.g., civil transmission, structural and geotechnical projects), to receive requests for engineering design service and updates project status within these systems.
- As directed by the specific groups engineering manager, update project tracking systems such as excel spreadsheets.
- Review/Recommend and process project design specifications through DocuSign when required
- Manage development and completion of projects Bill of Materials (B/M)
- Request Waste Characterization Investigation from Environmental groups
- Request SPCC evaluations from Environmental group for bank replacement projects
- Oversee local jurisdictional permitting requirements for projects as needed (e.g. grading, fence/perimeter wall, building and safety permits, etc.)
- Review of additional Prime submittals (drawings, calculations, assessments, Bill of Materials, transmittal, etc.)
- Review and approve as required, eMEL order forms for long lead items
- Review and approve shop details as required
Qualifications- It is preferred that the design project engineer possess a State of California professional engineering (Civil) license.
- Design project engineer will be responsible for learning and gaining a thorough understanding of all applicable Civil/Structural/Geotech standards, specifications, and guidelines. These will be provided prior to start.
- A design project engineer assigned to the Client Civil Engineering group projects shall have a thorough knowledge of land development design practices including grading, drainage, paving, hydrology, hydraulics, erosion control, walls, retaining walls, fences, etc. In addition, the design project engineer shall have experience with obtaining non-discretionary permits from agencies within client territory.
- A design project engineer assigned to the Structural Engineering group projects shall have a thorough knowledge of structural engineering design practices including design of foundations, cast-in-place footings, driven piles, concrete trenches, steel structures, supports, buildings, etc.
- A design project engineer assigned to the Structural Engineering group is to have thorough knowledge of current applicable industry and regulatory codes and standards (e.g., CBC, IEEE 693, IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 113, ASCE 41, ACI 318 etc.)
- A design project engineer assigned to the Structural Engineering group is preferred to have familiarity with AutoCAD software, Risa 3D, Enercalc, and similar structural software programs.
- A design project engineer assigned to the Geotechnical Engineering group projects shall have a thorough knowledge of geotechnical engineering practices such as geologic assessments, field investigations, laboratory testing, and report recommendations. The design project engineer shall be experienced with the geologic conditions found in client territory.
Working Location/Travel- The design project engineer must be able to work from a variety of locations under a hybrid schedule as set by the Client engineering manager they are assigned to.
- First the design project engineer must be able to work from the facility Client DE is currently working at: 1 Innovation Way, Pomona, California, 1-2 days per week or as set by the client engineering manager they are assigned to. Next, they must be able to travel to field visits and job walks. Finally, the remainder of the time in a typical work week, the design project engineer may work from home. The design project engineer must be able to travel to project locations throughout client territory, which extends from the Los Angeles basin to Santa Barbara County to Arizona to Nevada.
