Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1976 with the mission to “promote the healthy development of individuals and families, encourage service and volunteerism, and help build community.”

Engaging Community in Advocacy and Policy (ECAP) is a division of BACR that facilitates community-based public health advocacy throughout the Bay Area. Within this, the Smoke-Free Marin Coalition is seeking applicants for the position of Tobacco Coalition & Community Outreach Coordinator. The purpose of the coalition is to collaborate with the community to develop systems, change messaging and settings, advocate for policies lessen the predatory tactics of tobacco companies, reduce exposure to second and thirdhand smoke, prevent tobacco use young people, and create a healthy, safe environment for residents of Marin County.

The Smoke-Free Marin Coalition is seeking an Outreach Coordinator with a history of leadership in the fight for health equity and social justice, coupled with solid administrative experience. The coordinator will play a critical role in advocating for policy, systems and environmental change strategies, expanding the coalition membership and reach, and organizing major events that are the core of the coalition purpose. The coordinator will provide strategic direction and coordinate activities of the Smoke-Free Marin Coalition. This position is hybrid. Applicants must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area or surrounding counties and able to coordinate weekly, in-person activities in Marin County, and join up with the team in office 4-6 days per month.

About You

You believe that community members are inherently knowledgeable and capable of self- advocacy and that all people have a right to live in an environment that promotes health. You are committed to health justice, have experience working with communities and want to support an environment that allows youth to thrive without tobacco. You work well on your own, but enjoy being part of a supportive team with a common mission of dismantling structural, race-based barriers to health.

Advocacy Responsibilities

  • Recruit, educate, train, and lead Smoke-Free Marin Coalition in assisting or implementing program activities including, but not limited to, policy development, conducting Secondhand Smoke (SHS) outreach and education on SHS complaints, diversity outreach and education;
  • Work with members to plan, organize, and facilitate regular coalition meetings and organize;
  • Build leadership and organizing capacity of Marin County residents and community groups, to effectively drive and shape systemic change;
  • Develop fact sheets and public information media reports, creating and educating advocates with information kits for minimum price objective and multi-unit housing objective and meeting with community groups to educate on issues
  • Accelerates and monitors the Smoke-Free Marin Coalition's Endgame Objectives
  • Schedules Coalition meetings via Zoom and manage communication for the Smoke-Free Marin Coalition
  • Prepare Coalition members to members for public speaking, media interviews and public comment at city meetings;
  • Provide educational letter writing and property management educational support to help implement smoke-free housing ordinances;
  • Maintains Coalition website, posts updates on Facebook, occasional PSA's on local television stations, and develops e-newsletter updates for coalition members each month
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including community members, community-based orgs, government organizations, and other coalitions;
  • Gather community-based data, increasing opportunities for community input.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Coordinate monthly Coalition meetings; helping prepare agendas, taking meeting minutes and distributing coalition updates;
  • Utilize a database to track outreach and engagement;
  • Manage community health data and maintain relevant records;
  • Prepare and submit progress reports;
  • Participate in professional development and County meetings.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a mix of the following experiences and background:

  • Demonstrated experience working with policy-makers and community stakeholders to promote policy change; experience in public health, tobacco and/or policy is highly desirable
  • Experience engaging and mobilizing community members
  • Demonstrated commitment to issues of equity, social justice, diversity and cultural competency
  • Demonstrated capacity facilitating groups, achieving consensus, and taking action
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, confidence in public speaking, and ability to balance competing demands
  • Spanish – English Bilingual preferred
  • Knowledge of Marin County a plus
