Assistant Commissioner, Criminal Justice Policy

Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

Under direction of the Police Commissioner, serves as Assistant Commissioner of Criminal Justice Policy. Responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing criminal justice policies for the New York Police Department. Duties involve researching criminal justice issues, analyzing data, proposing policy changes, advocating for legislation, collaborating with stakeholders, and monitoring policy effectiveness to ensure a safe and fair criminal justice system. Key responsibilities may include:

- Policy Development:
Identifying critical criminal justice issues through data analysis and research.
Designing and crafting new criminal justice policies aligned with current research and best practices.
Evaluating the potential impact of proposed policies on various stakeholders.
Drafting policy proposals and legislation.

- Stakeholder Engagement:
Building relationships with law enforcement agencies, courts, correctional facilities, community organizations, and elected officials.
Facilitating discussions and collaborations with diverse stakeholders to gather input on policy development.
Presenting policy proposals to relevant committees and legislative bodies.

- Policy Implementation and Monitoring:
Overseeing the implementation of new criminal justice policies.
Tracking policy effectiveness through data analysis and evaluation.
Identifying areas for policy improvement and making necessary adjustments.

- Research and Analysis:
Conducting research on criminal justice trends, including crime statistics, recidivism rates, and emerging issues.
Analyzing data to inform policy decisions and identify areas for reform.
Preparing reports and presentations to communicate research findings to stakeholders.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

In compliance with Federal Law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years full- time satisfactory professional experience related to the projects and policies to be studied in the particular position, including eighteen months of experience in a managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity.

2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above; however, all candidates must possess eighteen months of experience in a managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity as described above.
