ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

Job Description

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Assistant Commissioner in the Bureau of Facilities Management. Reporting directly to the Associate Commissioner of Support Services, the successful candidate will be: responsible for overseeing the maintenance of 400 FDNY Facilities five boroughs and overseeing 90 employees serving in various titles. Manage the agencies Design & Construction unit including their Capital Program; oversee the Building Trades and 15,000 work orders received yearly. Responsible for managing 3-unit Directors of various skill sets, providing coordination and analysis of workloads. Ensure the staffing and timelines to meet project deadlines. Monitor the Expense and Capital budgets and grant-funded projects. Sign off on all projects of various degrees with coordination from agency and inter-agency stakeholders. Represent the agency at Fire, EMS and unions about Safety and Facility related issues and concerns. Serve as liaison with various City, State, and Federal agencies regarding projects as needed. Attend executive agency coordination meetings on all Facilities Management related issues and concerns. Work closely with all levels of the Agency on prioritizing and project planning.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, business administration, or public administration, and five years of full-time satisfactory experience in the planning, administering or expediting of engineering design, and/or construction, or coordinating a very large engineering project, two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or

2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine years of experience as described in "1" above; two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory capacity; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. An accredited Master's degree in one of the disciplines described in "1" above, a law degree, or a valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect or Landscape Architect may be substituted for one year of the required experience. However, all candidates must have the two years of the administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in "1" above.
