WHO YOU ARE 
Explore Schools seeks an experienced instructional leader who demonstrates a drive toward excellence and is passionate about serving all students. This individual will be responsible for ensuring that science, technology, and mathematics instruction is characterized by rigor, thoughtfulness, and alignment to the standards, our shared vision, and culturally responsive pedagogy for grades 6-8. They will also serve as a member of the network’s program team, providing coaching and support for staff members at the network and at schools. Additionally, you possess the following qualities: 

Skills and Previous Experience: 

  • Track record of academic results; evidence of being able to move the practice of teachers and results of students by responding to data  
  • Systems-based thinker; one who is skilled at creating and implementing systems and processes that enable work to be accomplished effectively across a school or network 
  • Influential communicator and team builder; an active listener who can inspire others around a shared vision and motivate team members to work together to execute against the vision that has been set 
  • Outstanding content knowledge in science and/or mathematics in grades K-8; minimum of 3+ years teaching experience required 
  • Experience providing network and/or school-based leadership in science and/or mathematics; 2+ years leadership experience required; experience as a school leader, coaching and supervising leaders preferred 
  • Master's degree in education, preferred 

WHAT YOU’LL DO 
In partnership with both the Chief Academic Officer and the Senior Director of Science, Technology and Mathematics, this leader is responsible for the implementation of curriculum, design and creation of assessments, and professional development related to leader and teacher inputs to actualize the organization’s priorities and meet our annual measures. This role reports to the SD of Science, Technology and Mathematics, and along with the Chief Academic Officer, collaborates with the rest of the network program team to ensure effective implementation of activities and initiatives that will enable Explore Schools to achieve our mission.  In addition, as a Director, this person may serve as a coach to network-based and school-based leaders. You will be expected to manage the following: 

Science, Technology & Mathematics Leadership 

  • Collaborate with program team and other stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the vision for our mathematics, science, and technology program 
  • Pursue end-of-year goals and measures for science, technology and mathematics and establish structures for progress monitoring and ongoing analysis and reflection 
  • Coordinate and develop school support structures for network-wide content planning and data-driven practices for science, technology, and mathematics learning and achievement. 
  • Coordinate and ensure high-quality execution of all science, technology and mathematics-related programmatic items (grading, assessment guidelines, data-driven practices, professional development and scope & sequences) 
  • Facilitate the process to choose/create supplementary materials based on student achievement data and vision for science, technology and mathematics instruction 
  • Collaborate with network content-leads and other leaders to ensure aligned supports and resources for schools 
  • Review school data and conduct observations to provide recommendations and support to school-based leadership teams focused on instructional priorities in science, technology and mathematics 
  • Attend and/or facilitate curriculum and planning meetings with school leadership teams and/or teachers 
  • Develop and facilitate professional development workshops for school-based content coordinators, academic directors, and teachers 

School-Based Instructional Leadership Development & Supervision 

  • Provide instructional leadership coaching to school-based leaders (including but not limited to coordinators, directors, principals) 
  • Set clear, measurable goals and implement coaching activities that facilitate development in alignment with Explore Schools’ Leadership Development Frameworks and network priorities 
  • Develop and provide professional development focused on building instructional leadership capacity aligned to network priorities and leadership needs 
  • Design structures and materials to align practices and approaches across schools; support schools to execute using common tools and approaches 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

Explore Schools staff members receive a competitive salary, paid time off including network shutdown days, considerable matching of retirement contributions, and more.  

  • The incoming salary range for a Director of Science, Technology and Mathematics is $100,000 to $120,000. This is our good faith range at the time of posting.  
  • Incoming salaries are determined based on experience and internal equity.  
  • Because we value staff members staying in their roles over time, we do not currently cap salary ranges and this is the range for incoming staff members only.  
  • This is base salary and does not include additional compensation opportunities, such as signing bonuses, additional time worked pay, stipends, leadership opportunities, and additional pay for specialized certifications and advanced degrees.

LOCATION AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  

Explore Schools is a network of 6 charter schools located in Canarsie, Crown Heights, and Flatbush communities of Brooklyn, NY. Our network office is in DUMBO, Brooklyn. For this position: 

  • In-person work is required.  
  • This is an exempt position and is not eligible for overtime.  
  • The standard work week is 45 hours, though at times you may work more.  
  • This role requires that you be able to stand for at least 5 hours a day, take multiple trips up and down the stairs in a day, and be able to move quickly in an emergency.   
  • This role also requires that you be able to lift up to 15 pounds.
