Staff Software Engineer - Back End - MarTech

Our technology efficiently manages the real-time assignment of Runners to Favors, facilitates communication between customers, Runners, and support, keeps thousands of customer and Runner mobile applications in sync, and more.

As a Staff Software Engineer at Favor you will be responsible for all phases of development, testing, and deployment of our web applications, back-end services, databases, and data warehouse. You will work closely with our product and operations teams to understand customer needs, build simple solutions to complex problems, and deliver delightful experiences to all our users.

What You'll Do:
  • Design and build solutions across multiple teams to drive automation, improve data collection and data accuracy, and enhance the overall efficiency of marketing operations and marketing strategies.
  • Implement accurate tracking and attribution models that tie marketing efforts to revenue outcomes and optimize for growth across acquisition channels.
  • Drive engineering excellence by leading documentation efforts, establishing technology standards, and providing training to enhance technical proficiency across the team and organization.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders to design, develop, and deploy high-availability, highly-performant backend systems.
  • Explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, driving alignment on project goals and objectives.
  • Communicate individual and project-level development statuses, issues, risks, and concerns to technical leadership and management. 
  • Independently build, diagnose, and fix high-complexity technical issues. 


Skills You Have:
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, experience in a high-growth startup a plus. 
  • Strong knowledge of the MarTech landscape, with experience in tools like Twilio Segment, Snowflake, Branch, Braze, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to lead larger initiatives working with the product, design, and engineering teams. 
  • Advanced understanding of software design patterns to write clean, well-structured, idiomatic code leveraging the full power of a language. 
  • Strong grasp of data modeling, analytics pipelines, and event-driven architectures relevant to customer data platforms (CDPs), attribution, and personalization.
  • Strong understanding of test automation techniques. 
  • Ability to gather and define software requirements considering multiple patterns and strategies to build efficient solutions. 
  • Expertise in debugging, performance tuning, and observability to diagnose complex system issues.
  • Experience designing and optimizing RESTful APIs, API versioning strategies, and security best practices for data-driven applications.
  • Communicates difficult technical concepts in precise, concise, and unambiguous terms across engineering and business teams
  • Knowledge of database design, indexing, and query optimization, particularly for marketing data and customer analytics.
  • Knowledge of how different parts of a system architecture will work together and can diagnose issues within the system.
  • Have experience or familiarity with one or more of the following technologies: Kotlin, Java, PHP, Scala, MySQL, Postgres, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, Elasticsearch, JUnit, Jenkins


Who You Are:
  • Appreciate simple design. 
  • Love to write clean, well-tested code - test first, or TDD approaches a plus. 
  • Have experience or familiarity with one or more of the following technologies: Kotlin, Java, PHP, Scala, MySQL, Postgres, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, Elasticsearch, JUnit, Jenkins
  • Enjoy working with other engineers in a collaborative and iterative environment. 
  • Value continuous learning and seek opportunities to refine processes, improve tooling, and level up team skills.
  • Communicate well with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Act as a mentor and coach, fostering technical growth through pair programming, code reviews, and knowledge sharing. 
  • Advocate for strong engineering culture, encouraging collaboration, curiosity, and a growth mindset.

Where you’ll work: This is a hybrid role, meaning you’ll work from home roughly three days per week and collaborate with other team members in person at our HQ in Austin, Texas for the remaining work days.
