Role Overview

At Berkeley Hillel, we’re looking for someone who is a creative & outgoing professional with strong interpersonal, communications, and project management skills to serve as the Manager of Leadership and Engagement. The Manager of Leadership & Engagement works within a dynamic team of other programming staff both collaboratively and independently, leading the charge in creating and implementing a comprehensive leadership and  engagement strategy to reach the estimated 2,500 Jewish students on campus. A core component of this position is working closely with student leaders and engaging with students to find ways for them to create opportunities for them to build Jewish community. 

What You’ll Do

(This role is dynamic, and we encourage you to bring your own creativity and ideas!)

  • Oversee and facilitate the Schutz Leadership and Engagement fellowship for both first-year and upperclassmen students.
  • Strengthen and empower student volunteer leaders by providing them with the training, tools and resources to create innovative social, cultural, educational, and religious programs that energize Jewish life on campus
  • Support staff members in their work with student leaders with a lens toward leadership
  • Meet a student for coffee to learn more about her/his Jewish journey.
  • Attend a Jewish group program (Challah4Hunger braiding, Weekly BBQ, group meeting).
  • Be on campus to promote Berkeley Hillel
  • Engage with Social media in creative and fun ways

  • Meeting new people, forming deeper connections through listening and empathy to  learn more about their Jewish journey
  • Connecting to college students and having a desire to interact with the diverse community and constituents of UC Berkeley Hillel.  
  • Managing multiple projects, with many moving parts, set timetables and adhere to deadlines.
  • Finding
  • Motivating staff members and student leaders to think outside-the-box in terms of reaching new Jewish students on campus.
  • Participate in ongoing Jewish learning and professional development.
  • Using social media as a vehicle as a creative outlet for students to engage with Hillel

The right Manager of Leadership and Engagement will possess the following key attributes:

  • Engaging –The Manager of Leadership and Engagement must be an excellent interpersonal engaging individual and outgoing person who is interested in meeting with students both one on one and in large group settings.  They need to be able to help students connect with the greater Jewish community at Cal. 
  • Innovative – The Manager of Leadership and Engagement must be a creative thinker to best address the needs of the Jewish students. They should be someone that enjoys taking thoughtful risks that advance the mission of the organization.
  • Organized –The Manager of Leadership and Engagement needs to be organized, driven, and self-motivated. They should understand the big picture of the organization and how best to implement initiatives that best serve the UC Berkeley Hillel. 
  • Mentor and Relationship Builder– They will work closely with the Associate Director to create a comprehensive engagement strategy and implement it within the Student Life Team and student leader community.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • 2-4 years in Jewish non-profit work, experiential or higher education
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Knowledge of what makes people tick - you can connect people’s passions and interests to Hillel’s mission
  • Comfort in managing teams as well as working independently and collaboratively
  • An entrepreneurial spirit - things may not always go according to plan, but you understand that ambiguity is part of developing great new opportunities
  • A commitment to pluralism and comfort with your Jewish identity so you may act as a role model and mentor for emerging Jewish adults

What You’ll Receive

  • The salary range for this role is $60,000-$70,000
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, Life, AD&D and Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurances, Flexible Spending accounts, generous vacation/sick time, and parental leave.
