Job Description

This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program.  The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below: 

International SOS is looking for an individual who is an experienced Vascular Surgeon to diagnose and treat diseases affecting the vascular system, including arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. This role involves performing surgical and minimally invasive procedures to restore blood flow, manage vascular conditions, and improve patients' overall health and quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

  • 95% of the time involved in direct patient care.  
  • Responsible for providing vascular procedures, including, but not limited: Services for patients from a wide range of ages, backgrounds and diagnoses; therefore, competence in the examination and treatment of patients will be demonstrated through performing angiographic, vascular surgical procedures and endovascular procedures (both perioperative and in collaboration with other specialties). 
  • Follow patients through the full continuum of care including admissions and discharges. 
  • Assist in the coordination of diagnostic tests prior to a surgical procedure. 
  • Educate and counsel the patient and family members.  
  • Oversee the administration of moderate sedation, mentoring and teaching residents, and other tasks inherent to a vascular surgeon.  
  • Be present on time for any scheduled clinics as documented by physical presence in the clinic at the scheduled start time.  
  • Provide consultation with and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for vascular procedures so that the most expeditious and clinically appropriate work-up can be done.  
  • Determine the appropriate course of treatment and communicate in person or by phone with the referring clinicians. 
  • Review of consults and next- day patient cases for minimum of two hours daily.  
  • Provide post-procedure evaluation, follow-up and clinical consultation regarding complications of vascular surgical procedures. 
  • Follow all established medication policies and procedures. No sample medications shall be provided to patients.  
  • Provide discharge education and follow up instructions that are coordinated with the next care setting for all emergency department patients.  
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation as required by the VAMC Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.  
  • Must attend: Operative and Invasive Committee and Surgical Morbidity & Mortality Committee.  
  • Attend staff meetings as required by the VAMC Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.  
  • Perform peer reviews. 
  • Complete the appropriate QM/PI documentation pertaining to all procedures, complications and outcome of examinations.  
  • Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards. 
  • Prevent medication errors, falls, and patient injury caused by acts of commission or omission in the delivery of care.  
  • Report all events related to patient injury, medication errors, and other breeches of patient information to the COR VA Safety Policy. As soon as practicable (but within 24 hours).

Qualifications

Basic Requirements/Certifications:  

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. 

Education Required: 

  • Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. 
  • Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Surgery. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. 
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. 
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs. 

Other Special Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate. 
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required. 
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

Additional Information

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
