Product Policy Manager - Penalty Systems

About the Team

The Product Policy team is responsible for the development, implementation, enforcement, and communication of the policies that govern use of OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT, GPTs, the GPT store, Sora, and the OpenAI API. As a member of this team, you will be instrumental in developing policy approaches to best enable both innovative and responsible use of AI so that our groundbreaking technologies are truly used to benefit all people. 

 

About the Role

As an early member of the Product Policy team, you will help develop the policy enforcement system governing use of OpenAI’s products. You will leverage an understanding of AI technology, consumer and developer products, as well as the policy landscape to help ensure OpenAI’s products benefit all of humanity.

We’re looking for people with experience developing penalty or strike systems for other tech platforms. Ideally they will have worked on AI and have supported policies and their enforcement on both first-party products like ChatGPT and on developer platforms. They will need to bring principled thinking regarding expression, safety, user education, transparency, process fairness, and other equities and seek ways to inform our policies with data. As OpenAI continues to grow, this role must quickly and effectively align diverse teams and stakeholders. Experience driving alignment across diverse functions will be essential. Ideal candidates will be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • In partnership with integrity, and ops teams, develop the policy enforcement system across OpenAI’s products, including ChatGPT and the API platform.

  • Identify opportunities to leverage data to inform our approach and ensure penalties are effective and targeted.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with teams throughout the company, including legal, integrity, ops, safety, communications, and others. 

  • Develop clear, principled thinking on education, transparency, remediation, proportionality, and other key elements of a penalty system.

 

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have worked 8+ years in a policy role at a tech company, ideally working on the design and refinement of a penalty system

  • Have experience with generative AI products and an understanding of their novel capabilities, risks, and policy considerations

  • Possess excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate with product managers, engineers, researchers, and executives alike

  • Are comfortable with ambiguity and enjoy going 0 to 1

  • Are a creative thinker with an eye for opportunities to leverage data to inform policies


You could be an especially great fit if you have:

  • Experience working on enforcement systems for both 1P products like ChatGPT and on developer platforms or other 3P surfaces and will have clear thinking on how policy approaches should adapt for each type of offering.

  • Provided policy support for compliance strategies for the Digital Services Act, UK Online Safety Act, and other relevant regulations.
