Location: Santa Clara, CA (on-site)

Job Term: Full-Time

The Opportunity:

Picarro is seeking an engineering leader to lead the development of our next-generation platform for analytical instruments. This is an amazing career development opportunity for the right individual to join a well-funded, growing company bringing truly transformative technology to new markets.

 

The ideal candidate will have leadership experience in a hybrid (hardware and software) product environment in the area of high-precision scientific instruments. As a strong technology leader, the Director of engineering needs to drive product innovation and success by going in-depth technically to balance engineering challenges with market requirements and successfully deliver new products in a highly demanding customer base of high-performance analytical instruments. The Director will lead a team of systems hardware and software engineers and work closely with peers from the R&D product group, Analytics group, and Field application scientists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and drive the overall product vision, strategy, and roadmap for related products, ensuring alignment with company goals and customer needs.
  • Oversee the full product lifecycle, from ideation to launch and optimization, ensuring timely and high-quality product releases.
  • Be a visionary for innovative solutions and group-level thinking to solve tough technical challenges.
  • Partner with the Engineering leaders across Analyzers, Integrated Systems, Design, and R&D groups to ensure successful product development and go-to-market execution.
  • Champion cross-functional collaboration across the organization to deliver goals and products that exceed customer expectations.
  • Use data-driven insights for decision-making and prioritization of new opportunities and existing product refinements.
  • Understand, respect, and appreciate the complexities of Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) and how a platform approach to software and hardware can accelerate the development of new CRDS analyzers.
  • Have the vision to enable the development of new analyzer products in different business and market verticals.
  • Lead, develop, and grow the best engineering talent based on the principles of DFM (design for manufacturability), DFS (design for serviceability), reliability, and scalability.
  • Ensure the engineering group understands the business direction and there is a tangible link between individual work and end goals.
  • Ensure the company at large understands the needs of engineering. Specify when technical debt must be addressed or when infrastructure must be added and the cost of doing so or not.
  • Establish a framework for making impactful technical decisions. Empower engineers to innovate while providing technical expertise/targeted questions to make the best decision for the business.
  • Embrace and evolve a culture of ownership, collaboration, quality, and fun.
  • Create the right balance of quality, architectural and design extensibility, time to market, and experimentation needed in a start-up.
  • Manage the budget and resources for the product group, ensuring efficient and effective use of company resources.
  • Make tough decisions and take actions that have a significant material impact on our customers and our business.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to address the multifaceted opportunities we face and create achievable growth plans.
  • Manage development teams and gauge performance and goals for the company and individuals.
  • Build the team with talented individuals that fit technically and culturally. Retain key hires.
  • Ensure the effective operation of all systems, meeting service level metrics and maintaining data security.
  • Develop and maintain any software development policies/procedures, including security objectives.

 

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of hands-on engineering leadership to build innovative enterprise products like digital devices and analytical instruments.
  • Proven experience and ability to accelerate product releases by building a platform with modular hardware subsystems, firmware, and advanced architecture.
  • Proven experience in building an outsourcing-ready platform for mass market production - a key area of growth and the Company's future focus.
  • 15+ years of development team/people management experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree or MS degree (preferred) in Computer Science or technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Exceptional communication skills - ability to be an active participant in nuanced technical discussions as well as an ability to represent the platform/solution/challenge to a non-technical audience.
  • Comfortable collaborating and communicating with all levels of the organization, including cross-functional teams, senior executives, and C-level business partners.
  • Continual assessment, refinement, maturation, implementation, and enforcement of engineering standards and best practices.
  • Ability to voice a strong opinion and make business-oriented decisions. Keen ability to analyze tradeoffs to drive informed conclusions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and people leadership skills.
  • Experience partnering with Product Management organizations to drive value through technology innovation.
  • Thorough understanding of the latest approaches to agile development of hardware and software products and ability to engage well with tech leads.
  • Ability to adapt and handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Track record of consistently achieving product delivery, employee satisfaction, and retention.
  • Results-oriented with a focus on delivering value for the customer.

Salary & Benefits:

The base salary range for this full-time position is $220,000–$260,000. Your base salary and title will be determined based on the location, experience, qualification, skills, knowledge, level, and pay of other employees in similar positions.
