Department SSD Chicago Center on Democracy-Staff and Temporary Employees About the Department The Chicago Center on Democracy is an academic center at the University of Chicago, which uses the power of academic research and discussion to support democracy worldwide. We are a hub for those working on issues of democracy at the university. Job Summary Under general guidance, the job performs a broad range of operational business activities relating to the design, planning, and execution of events and programming. The Chicago Center on Democracy seeks a creative, detail-oriented individual to coordinate outreach and events oriented around topics of democracy. Reporting to the center’s Operations Director, this person in this role organizes and implements events, and plans, creates, and disseminates information about activities of the center. Responsibilities Dream up interesting events activities we can organize for students and others. Coordinate with speakers and guests. Create and manage registration pages. Reserve venues. Correspond with vendors. Determine ways to get students aware and interested in our events and activities. Support reimbursements. Provide introductory remarks for some events. Set up venues: put up signage, bring center merchandise, ensure catering arrives, etc. Provide support for A/V issues. Maintain inventory of event supplies. Ensure the seating is set up correctly in the room. Manage the center’s social media planning and strategy, developing and publishing content across social channels. Manage content on the center’s website, creating and updating copy and images for news, event listings, and other pages. Draft content for mailing list. Implement strategies to grow subscribers to our channels. Help with administrative matters at the center, especially calendar management for the faculty director. Conduct certain research support tasks, as needed. Be available to help address other needs of the center that arise. Plans and schedules events, programs, and outreach. Coordinates event-day logistics, and performs other routine assignments with guidance from others. Maintains guest lists and assists with mailing invitations and creating brochures for the event. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: — Preferred Qualifications Education: A college or university degree in a social sciences field. Experience: Demonstrated experience in a professional setting organizing events and communications. Technical Skills or Knowledge: Event planning, social media management, graphic design, website management. Preferred Competencies Communications expertise, both written and spoken. Passion for issues related to democracy. Capacity to project manage and prioritize among competing priorities. Working Conditions Person in this role must be available to work in person at the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, though a certain amount of remote work may be allowed. Availability to work some evenings and occasional weekends to staff events. Workspace, and all needed materials and supplies will be provided.
