Founded in 1996, Food Access LA is a leading Southern California nonprofit organization, connecting people to healthy food, promoting economic development, and building sustainable food systems. We operate the largest network of mission-driven farmers’ markets in Los Angeles as well as programs that provide nutrition education, food access, and opportunities for small regional farms and local food businesses to thrive.  

Our programs include:  

  • Operating a network of seven community-based certified farmers’ markets in Los Angeles.  
  • Piloting and championing programs that stretch public nutrition benefits for the purchase of fresh, nutrient-rich food.   
  • Providing extensive nutrition education programs to low-income families and to children in underserved schools.  

Job Description

TITLE: Program Coordinator – eat! Food Distribution 
STATUS:  Non-Exempt; Part-time (with potential to go full-time) 
REPORTS TO: Director, eat! Food Distribution  

LOCATION:  Hybrid - Remote & On-Site at Farmers’ Markets  

COMPENSATION: Starting at $25/hour 
SCHEDULE:  28 hours a week, up to 8-hour shifts, WED-SUN. Typically 3 Days at Markets (Driving shifts), 1-2 days remote. 

About Eat! Food Distribution Program 

The eat! Program is our bulk food distribution program that impacts both our small farmers and our communities living near our farmers' market locations. Through eat!, and in conjunction with community partners with direct access to families in need, we distribute food boxes filled with fresh, local produce to families in need throughout LA & Ventura Counties. In addition to our food boxes, the eat! program curates a seasonal CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program for market shoppers who are interested in a weekly delivery of produce. We also currently work with the LA Regional food bank to assist with the procurement of bulk produce from our farmers. Additionally, we are testing our wholesale delivery program for restaurants, schools, and other community partners and reusable food wares program at one of our markets. 

As the Program Coordinator, you will be directly involved in all aspects of our food distribution programs and will need to be adaptable and responsive to the growing and changing needs of the program. This position will primarily assist the Director, eat! Food Distribution in the following areas: 

RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Assist with the coordination of bulk deliveries to community locations, working with our Program Director to communicate with farmers and community partners. 

  • Assist with invoicing, excel spreadsheet tracking, and other online organizational duties. 

  • Manage CSA membership communications, including creation of a weekly newsletter, answering member e-mails, and communicating with farmers to curate the weekly selection. 

  • Works on-site at the farmers market three times per week, packing orders and delivering orders to CSA members, CSA pick-up sites, and our restaurant, school, and other wholesale partners. 

  • Occasionally attend on site farm visits, community partner site visits, and other related events. 

  • Assist with management of the eat! online platform to troubleshoot issues and test online ordering with our software developers. 

  • Assist and/or be responsible for the transportation of food wares to and from the Atwater Village Farmers’ Market to a cleaning kitchen. 

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • A minimum of (1) years of relevant experience, preferably in a project coordinator or similar role at a non-profit or related organization. 

  • A clean driving record and experience driving a 15-passenger van or smaller; or experience driving a company-owned vehicle. 

  • Experience fulfilling, packing and delivering orders. 

  • Experience managing multiple tasks in an organized and detailed manner, and working on a team or independently when needed 

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:  

  • Multilingual; Spanish proficiency strongly preferred. 

  • Proficiency with social media and other technology platforms. 

  • Experience working in community food systems, especially those within the Los Angeles area. 

  • Experience working with underserved, low-income communities with awareness and integrity. 

  • Experience conducting or assisting with surveys and assessments. 

PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORK ENVIRONMENT 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a tablet and telephone keyboard, stoop kneel to squat to lift boxes, set up tents, tables and other equipment (must be able to lift up to 25lbs). Most work will take place outside, sometimes in rainy, hot, or cold weather conditions.  

May perform related duties as assigned by management.
