The Senior Assignment Coordinator will be a seasoned news professional who will play a crucial role in our newsroom operations, bringing a wealth of experience into various aspects of news gathering, news production, digital content creation, and audience engagement. The Senior Assignment Coordinator will be a leader in our newsroom who urgently and aggressively cover breaking and developing stories. This position must be passionate about local news and have a track record of gathering hard news with the balance of many voices and perspectives.
The Senior Assignment Coordinator will join a combined assignment desk and digital team that manages newsroom assignments and oversees the quality of CBS 8 stories across all platforms. The CBS 8 newsroom is proudly a “one content team,” meaning broadcast and digital share equal stage. We believe in constant learning, but the Sr. Assignment Coordinator is expected to stay current with evolving digital journalism trends and technologies. This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of news delivery in a rapidly changing media landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
• Newsgathering and Crew Deployment: Identify relevant stories and efficiently manage news crews
• Social Media Monitoring: Utilize social platforms to identify emerging news leads and track trends
• Liaison: Act as a primary point of contact between the station and external agencies
• Story Tracking: Monitor ongoing news developments and plan future coverage strategies
• Internal Communication: Gather and share story updates, tips, and information within the newsroom, ensuring all staff are informed of every development
• Content Evaluation: Review and respond to various sources (news releases, tips, emails, user-generated content) to identify unique, local, and engaging stories
• Reporting: Conduct necessary reporting efforts, including making calls, obtaining visual assets, researching, and confirming information
• Quality Control: Ensure accuracy and balance in stories through collaboration with reporters and news managers
• Breaking News Management: Work urgently to verify breaking news, updating as needed. Work closely with news management to form breaking news plan, moving crews, making calls, and relaying information to crews in the field and at the station.
• Editorial Leadership: Actively participate in editorial meetings, including pitching stories
• Analytics: Use digital and social analytics to inform editorial decisions
• Cross-Platform Coordination: Work with various teams to develop and distribute content across all editorial platforms
• Network Collaboration: Collaborate with other TEGNA stations, CBS affiliates, and partners to leverage trending content, making sure our newsroom is on top of these trending stories
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• BA/BS in journalism, communications, or related field or 5+ years of experience on an assignment desk or digital producer
• Strong understanding of professional journalism principles
• Exceptional news judgment and strong communication skills
• Ability to adopt an "audience-first" approach in news gathering and distribution
• Adaptability to various news distribution methods and platforms
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to work under constant deadline pressure
• Proficiency in digital and social media analytics tools
