Staff Mechanical Engineer

ABOUT US:

Volta Labs is an applications company that is revolutionizing the future of genomics. We are a Boston based, venture-backed biotech startup that makes extracting vital information from biological samples is as simple as pressing a button, through our flagship product Callisto. Our product speeds up processing time for scientists and increases accessibility to important genetic information for patients. Sitting at the intersection of science and engineering, we invite you to join us on our journey to shape the future of genomics, where insatiable curiosity is encouraged and every Voltarian makes an impact.

THE TEAM:

You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.

We are seeking a highly motivated Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our team developing innovative life sciences instruments. In this role, you will be a significant contributor to the mechanical and systems design for our instrument, Callisto. A successful candidate will have experience holding a highly accountable technical role in the development and launch of complex electromechanical systems.

If you thrive in a dynamic startup environment, enjoy rolling up your sleeves and are driven by creating impact, we invite you to join our team.

Day to Day and Year 1
  • Continuous development of the Callisto sample prep system: this involves owning mechanical systems level requirements, architecting and driving systems solutions that span mechanical engineering and will interface with electrical and software engineering.
  • Drive the sustaining engineering efforts such as failure analysis of issues reported by customers in the field. Translate these into learnings to design improvement to harden the existing Callisto system as well as develop requirements for the next-generation platform.
  • Work closely with mechanical and systems engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Analytical modeling of designs using computer-based tools and hand calculations
  • Rapid prototyping, integration and testing of parts and systems
  • Interdisciplinary troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Creating specialized test fixtures and assembly jigs
  • Lead mechanical design reviews and technical presentations
  • Work with supply chain and manufacturing on production transfer activities

  • Within 3 months you’ll…Understand Volta Labs’ mission, values, and organizational structure, assess the status of ongoing projects and identify immediate issues.  Have delivered on execution of a cross functional development effort for the Callisto system with a mechanical engineering focus. This will involve developing a strong relationship with cross disciplinary teams and driving the effort from within this group.

  • By 6 months you’ll…Create a strategic plan for the engineering team aligned with company goals, introduce enhancements and standardization to engineering processes and tools, and collaborate regularly with other departments to drive company initiatives.  You would have established yourself as a mentor for the more junior engineers on the team and you are seen as a trusted advisor to the rest of the company within the mechanical field.

  • At 12+ months you’ll…Drive long-term engineering initiatives such as process improvements, definition of the next-generation system and create a roadmap for future mechanical projects and innovation strategies.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated track record with the design and architecture of mechanical (e.g., statics, mechanisms, motion) and electromechanical (e.g., motors, sensors, heating and cooling) systems.
  • Expertise in 3D CAD and version control (we use Onshape).
  • Extensive experience with detailed part design, including high precision machining, sheet metal design, and injection molding design.
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 including GD&T
  • Experience managing cross functional development partners.
  • Experience throughout the entire product design lifecycle from concept generation through manufacturing release and ramp.
  • Experience transferring designs to manufacturing
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to distill complex technical information into a clear message.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, interdisciplinary team environment and quickly adjust to rapidly evolving technology and priorities.
  • Minimum of 7 years of industry experience

Considered a Plus:
  • Experience with computer based numerical and analytical tools like FEA, MATLAB, and/or -Python/Numpy
  • Experience with control systems
  • Knowledge of exact constraints and kinematic design
  • Life science tools or biotechnology experience
  • Experience with PLM systems

This is a full-time position that requires a significant amount of in-person work and collaboration onsite at our Seaport Office in Boston, MA. If you are unable to relocate or commute to the Boston MA area, this role won't be a match.
