The big picture: Axios is a media company dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We’re looking for a true superstar executive assistant to juggle and manage the life of a CEO, author, columnist, and public speaker (among many other roles).
Why it matters: This Executive Assistant will be a calm, capable, unflappable and enthusiastic puzzle-solver reporting to the CEO’s Chief of Staff.
- The puzzle: how do you optimize CEO Jim VandeHei’s time, mindshare, and anticipate his needs, quirks and crazy scheduling twists?
- The good news: Jim is a great guy with great values, always brimming with new ideas and ‘let’s-do-this-now’ gusto. The ride is intellectually invigorating as you will cut across fascinating worlds and topics (politics, CEOs, AI and leadership) and you will learn a ton from an inspiring, kind but insanely ambitious guy in a company filled with super talented people (picked for their capacity to be wonderful colleagues despite their personal ambition).
Go deeper: But this job is not for the faint of heart. Jim’s life is probably in the upper 1% for complexity and velocity.
- You must be able to expertly manage schedules, anticipate AND solve problems.
- You must be able to learn to think, respond and act like Jim, and deftly interact with executives, clients and his family.
- This role will also offer scheduling and logistical support to our other co-founder, Mike Allen. His priorities and schedule often mirror Jim’s.
- Discretion is key, as is flexibility and focus. There’s no way to separate his personal and professional lives because he’s always on so this role will require developing a level of comfort interacting with key stakeholders who help manage his life outside Axios.
- Jim is on the go on the weekends too, so keeping his calendar and travel logistics up to date and accurate - as needed - is critical.
The details: Ideal candidates will embody a proactive, entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrate a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills:
- 5+ years of significant experience working with a busy top executive.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to interact appropriately and effectively across audiences in high stress environments.
- Expert G-suite proficiency.
- Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the judgement to make informed decisions with appropriate levels of urgency regarding priorities and available time.
- Ability to maintain a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
- Ability to complete a high volume of tasks and projects with little or no guidance.
Starting salary for this role is in the range of $95,000 - $130,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits.
What Axios brings to the table besides salary:
- 401(k) with employer match
- Robust PPO and High Deductible health insurance options on the Blue Cross Blue Shield network
- Employer Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution for the high deductible health plan option
- Dental and vision coverage
- Primary caregiver 12-week paid leave
- Generous vacation policy, plus holidays
- One mental health day per quarter
- Annual learning and development stipend
- $100 monthly work-from-home stipend
- Tele-mental health services through Headspace
- OneMedical membership, including tele-health services
- Personal health advocacy resources through HealthAdvocate
- Inclusive fertility, hormonal health and family forming benefits through Carrot Fertility
- Access to the Axios “Family Fund”, which was created to allow employees to request financial support when facing financial hardship or emergencies
- Increased work flexibility for parents and caretakers
- Virtual company-sponsored social events
- A strong and positive work environment
- A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture
