HIV Peer Educator

POSITION SUMMARY

Uses team approach to conduct field-based outreach, client engagement activities, provide testimonials during prevention education workshops, and provide service referrals and linkages with individuals eligible for Project Street Beat services, including those who are living with or at risk for HIV/STIs, active substance users, homeless/unstably housed, and/or exchange sex for food, drugs, or shelter. This is a per-diem position located in Hempstead with Project Street Beat, within PPGNY Region One.

· Region One - NYC + Nassau County New York, Nassau, Oneida, Kings, Queens, Richmond, and Bronx

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (WEIGHTED & WITH DETAIL)

Program and Office Support (65%)

· Works with the HIV Program team to engage potential clients, including targeted street outreach, "word of mouth,” and social networking within underserved communities in Nassau County.

· Performs outreach activities in communities where potential PSB clients congregate including methadone clinics, shooting galleries, strolls, community parks, street corners, and local business and service providers. Establishes trusting relationships and provides information on and makes referrals to PSB services.

· Provides services at PPGNY HIV prevention grant targeted communities along with program staff on the Plan Van or at CBOs.

· Facilitates linkages to internal and external services including HIV prevention/PrEP/PEP counseling, HIV primary care, HIV case management, and harm reduction services such as ESAP and overdose prevention services; as well as PPGNY health centers and external social service agencies.

· Works with the Manager of HIV Prevention Programs to ensure clients are engaged in prevention services including PrEP, PEP, HIV Primary Care and other services as needed.

· Assist in the assembly of safe sex kits, promotional bags, and other related program supplies.

Administrative Team Coordination (10%)

· Maintains a supply of outreach materials on the Plan Van and communicates with the team to ensure that materials are available.

Budgetary/Statistical Support (10%)

· Completes and submits service documentation such as the outreach tally or sign-in attendance sheet during workshops, assist program participants with the AIRS Intake Form;

· Accepts individual responsibility for distribution of program supplies, and documentation of incentives, according to PSB Incentive Distribution Policy.

Customer Service Responsibilities (5%)

· Participates in ongoing training on changes with regard to HIV prevention services, in addition other relevant topics.

Human Resources (5%)

· Completes all responsibilities according to established protocols, policies and standard practices in the areas of ADA and regulatory compliance programs such as HIPAA.

Special Projects (5%)

· Performs other educational and experience related duties as required.

• Peer educator must be either one of the following: HIV+, affected by a close family member, PrEP user, or be a practicing risk reduction consistent condom user.
• Must be 6-12 months clean and in recovery.
• Flexible hours and must have a car or the ability to travel to programs.
• Ability to positively engage with the community and work in non-traditional settings; and have connections with community-based organizations in Nassau County. Representative of the grant target population.
• Good verbal communication skills and comfortable with public speaking.
• Understands the dynamics of working in a team environment.
• Must demonstrate competency regarding cross cultural differences and issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

• Good interpersonal skills and willingness and availability to support our population in the field as needed.
• Good organizational and time management skills and ability to record data. Basic computer skills a plus.
• Preferred experience working with issues such as homelessness, HIV/AIDS, substance use and mental health issues.
• Fluent in Spanish and/or other languages preferred.
• Experience in public speaking a plus but not mandatory. Training will be provided.

Proof of immunization or immunity to certain communicable diseases (including influenza during the flu season and Covid-19) and testing for tuberculosis. These certifications are required by the NYC DOHMH Health Code, NYSDOH and OSHA.
