The City of Fort Worth Library System seeks an Assistant Library Director with proven leadership and team building ability. This individual should be strategic, and results driven with a deep knowledge and experience with managing multiple projects, operational improvements and change management. Also, this individual must have the ability to transform vision into reality, envisioning, creating, and implementing a fresh direction for library operations.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to blend traditional and leading-edge library services in an environment of continuous improvement and evolution. Additionally, the successful candidate will have demonstrated a desire to serve the public through excellent library service, strong commitment to staff development and well-being; and knowledge of library best practices around the country.  One of two assistant directors, this position reports directly to the Library Director.

Under the general direction of the Library Director, the Assistant Libraries Director of Operations will oversee multiple internal support services of the library. The Assistant Director for Operations will also interface with executive management, business partners, stakeholders and staff.  The individual we seek can quickly build trust, is politically savvy, and works successfully in large, diverse, urban environments.  Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, assisting in the management of all department services and activities related to finance and budget, communications, facilities, capital and bond projects, information technology (IT), human resources, safety and security, as well as assisting the Assistant Library Director for Public Services in the coordination and implementation of services.  In the role as Assistant Director for Operations, this individual will serve on a variety of boards, commissions and committees; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library and information sciences from an American Library Association accredited college or university and six years of public library management and administrative experience
  • Four years of administrative and supervisory responsibility
  • Valid Texas driver's license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference may be given for additional education, knowledge, experience and/or certification as it relates to the position.
  • Preference may also be given for leadership experience in a multi-branch and multi-million-dollar system.

The Assistant Library Director job responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and provide leadership for library operations staff members, including daily management, performance evaluations, team building activities and staff recognitions.
  • Oversee day-to-day library activities, ensuring smooth operations for the following FWPL work units: finance and human resources, communications, facilities, data collection and IT.
  • Help prepare and manage the library department’s budget and act as a primary liaison for the city’s budget and finance offices.
  • Monitor spending, ensuring that the library department stays within budget, and works with staff to seek and manage additional funding through grants, donations, or partnerships if necessary.
  • Take the lead on specific initiatives including capital and bond projects, facility upgrades, and safety and security initiatives.
  • Oversight for all library technology, with specific emphasis on strategic direction of public-facing technology.
  • Work with other departments and external organizations on initiatives that benefit the library and its community.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Operations, services and activities of a large, urban public library.
  • Principles and practices of library management and professional library work.
  • Principles and practices of municipal budget preparation and administration.
  • Human resources practices and regulations.
  • Strategic planning with staff and public to create future roadmap for operations.
