A Sr. Environmental Specialist job is available with The City of Fort Worth Environmental Services Department within its Water Quality Team. The City of Fort Worth, Water Quality Section, performs critical program functions ensuring compliance with respective municipal, state, and federal rules and regulations, including Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Programs.

In order to be considered, you must submit a PowerPoint exercise, which will be assigned to candidates chosen for interviews.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of responsible experience in state or federally-regulated environmental programs.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Candidate selected for hire must pass a Pre-Employment Drug Screen, Physical Human Performance Evaluation, Criminal Background check and Driver’s License Check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in stormwater compliance investigations, best management practices, and stormwater monitoring practices.
  • Experience with MS4 permit regulations and related activities such IDDE, spill response, Wet Weather Monitoring, Rapid Bio Assessments, Cosmetic Cleaners, and Internal Assessments.
  • Experience with training/instructing junior personnel in the procedures/protocols of their assigned duties.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS, and use of database systems.
  • Clear and effective communication with internal-/external customers, entities, and agencies, including Technical Writing Skills
  • Performing troubleshooting and data analysis and metrics tracking skills; project and program management skills.
  • HAZWOPER Certified.

The Sr. Environmental Specialist job responsibilities include:

  • Lead and act as the subject matter expert for the Rapid Bioassessment Program and potentially other water quality programs and ensure compliance with the City of Fort Worth's MS4 permit.
  • Perform MS4 compliance and enforcement of related activities such as Industrial Stormwater, Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE), spill response, TPDES industrial and construction stormwater, dry weather and wet weather field screen, spill response, and commercial cosmetic cleaners and internal audit assessment.
  • Perform and report on all assigned investigations/inspections and comply with the City of Fort Worth and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines as required.
  • Aiding and assisting supervisory personnel in the tracking and oversight of the Water Quality Section essential functions.
  • Assist citizens in compliance with TPDES/NPDES permits through guidance and workshops.
  • Assist in public education events, public meetings, and preparing and presenting scientific, technical, and training presentations.
  • Receive training and assignments for duties across the Water Quality Section, Environmental Division, and Code Compliance Department.
  • Track team workload and deliverables completion, including Quality assurance of staff members' work product.
  • Prepare and submit the required project/program reporting.
  • Provide routine data reports and program analytics.

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, unsanitary conditions, workspace restrictions, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor even when dealing with upset customers/citizens.

Physical Demands

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
