About Us

Toolkit Tutors is a high-impact tutoring company dedicated to helping students master academic content while developing the study skills they need for long-term success. We provide in-person, small-group tutoring for NYC public schools, specializing in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Social Studies.

The Job

We are looking for a bilingual (Spanish-English) K-5 ELA tutor to work in-person with elementary school students in Brooklyn. Tutors will push into classrooms and provide small-group literacy support to students who need extra help in reading and writing. The focus will be on building foundational literacy skills, reading comprehension, and early writing development.

Tutors will work in person, 2 days per week, 5 hours per day, from April 1 to May 30, 2025. The position pays $33/hour.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging, structured ELA instruction in small-group settings within classrooms.
  • Support students in foundational literacy skills, including phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension.
  • Help students develop early writing skills, including sentence structure, paragraph organization, and responding to texts.
  • Adapt instruction to Spanish-speaking students as needed, using bilingual explanations and scaffolding techniques.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure tutoring sessions align with existing literacy instruction.
  • Take daily attendance using a personal device (mobile phone) or a school-issued laptop.
  • Communicate professionally with school staff and Toolkit Tutors leadership.

We are looking for tutors who meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (completed, or close to completion showing strong academic performance).
  • At least one year of experience teaching or tutoring in an elementary school setting.
  • Experience working with urban school communities and an understanding of the challenges students face.
  • Strong content knowledge in early literacy instruction, including phonemic awareness, decoding strategies, and reading fluency.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English (spoken and written).
  • Punctual, reliable, and committed to student success.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage young learners effectively.
  • Ability to commute to the school location in Brooklyn.
  • DOE fingerprint clearance strongly preferred.
