About Us

Toolkit Tutors is a high-impact tutoring company dedicated to helping students master academic content while developing essential study skills. We provide in-person, small-group tutoring for NYC public schools, supporting students who need extra help in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Social Studies.

The Job

We are looking for an ELA tutor to work in-person with middle school students in small groups (1-4 students per group) at a school in the West Bronx. Students will need support with reading comprehension, writing skills, and critical thinking strategies. Our model emphasizes structured, skill-building instruction that helps students improve both academically and in their ability to study effectively.

Tutors will work in person on Saturdays from March 8 to June 14, 2025, providing 3-4 hours of instruction per day.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging, structured ELA instruction in small-group settings.
  • Support students in reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary development.
  • Integrate study skills strategies (e.g., note-taking, active reading) into sessions.
  • Take daily attendance using a personal device (mobile phone) or a school-issued laptop.
  • Communicate professionally with school staff and Toolkit Tutors leadership.

We are looking for tutors who meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (completed, or close to completion showing strong academic performance).
  • At least one year of experience teaching or tutoring in a school or educational setting.
  • Experience working with urban school communities and an understanding of the challenges students face.
  • Strong content knowledge in ELA, including reading strategies, writing instruction, and grammar.
  • Punctual, reliable, and committed to student success.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage students effectively.
  • Ability to commute to the school location in the West Bronx.
  • DOE fingerprint clearance strongly preferred.
  • Pay Rate of $35 per hour
