Job Description

General Summary

Under supervision of Radiation Oncology personnel, including licensed therapists, physicians, nurses and other ancillary staff members, performs various support functions in the Department of Radiation Oncology/ Assists Radiation Therapist in providing related patient services, such as transporting, positioning, and preparing customized devices for radiation treatments.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Assists therapists in the preparation of simulation/treatment. Responsibilities include:

A. Greets and escorts patients to and from waiting rooms, providing assistance as needed.

B. Prepares patients for procedures. Transfers patients to treatment table with care for I.V.’s and catheters and other auxiliary equipment.

C. Assists in constructing/preparing customized immobilization devices used for patient’s treatment, following specific departmental guidelines.

D. Assists therapists with general and specialized procedures and room set-up. Identifies the required individualized immobilization components for patient setup in the electronic medical record.

E. Positions patient for anatomic area of interest with accuracy and validity. Properly positions patients in immobilization devices for treatment.

F. Demonstrates the safe handling, storing, cleaning and disposal of immobilization devices.

G. Performs clerical tasks such as scheduling daily appointments, as directed by the Radiation Therapist.

 

H. Maintains adequate stock of supplies/linen. Restocks treatment and simulation rooms.

I. Maintains a clean and hygienic work area.

  • Complies with established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Undertakes basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Assists with the maintenance of department facilities, equipment. Reports maintenance and repair needs to supervisor.
  • Maintains records, reports, and files as required. Compiles statistics as directed.
  • Attends in-service meetings and others as required.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through attendance and participation in educational programs, workshops, conferences, and keeps current with relevant literature.
  • Performs other delegated duties as directed/assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • On-the-job training
  • High School Diploma or GED required. BLS required.
  • Relevant paid or voluntary experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of radiologic technology, radiation therapy, routine nursing procedures, radiation protection and safety procedures.
  •  Ability to lift patients of up to 250 lbs. (with assistance), 80% of the time, and pushing/pulling/moving patients, approximately 50% of the time to move onto and off of the treatment table, via wheelchairs and/or stretchers.
  • Ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious disease using the appropriate “Universal Precautions,” and ability to work with ionizing radiation requiring observance of radiation safety procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in order to work with patients, medical and nursing personnel
  •  Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients under sever physical and emotional stress.
  • Because this position requires direct patient care, excellent customer care skills, proper phone etiquette, and a courteous, caring, professional attitude are a must.
