Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies. Workers Compensation Division, has an immediate need for a Medical Records Coding Technician to assist our Nursing Services team in our Omaha office. This individual will use their professional knowledge, education, and training to review medical records to determine and assign the appropriate ICD-10 codes related to the reported workplace injury and in accordance with the Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10-Clinical Modification (CM) guidelines.
Reports to Nursing Services Manager.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Review clinical information from a variety of medical records to assign appropriate ICD-10 code/s relevant to workplace injuries for reported claims according to established procedures.
- Identify comorbid conditions to determine potential impact to the recovery process as well as any financial impact to the overall claim according to established procedures.
- Monitor and manage newly reported claims report to identify which claims need review and coding.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and safeguard protected health information in accordance with state and federal law and Company policies.
- Attain and maintain a high level of current medical knowledge relating to the injuries and conditions most common in workers compensation claims, including new methods of diagnosis and treatment.
- Provide medical and/or administrative support throughout the department, including gathering and organizing medical records for Medicare Set Asides (MSA) for eligible claimants.
- Foster a positive and close working relationship with other Company staff, including the Adjusting staff, Utilization Review, Medical Bill Review, Special Investigations, Legal, and Lien Resolution.
QUALIFICATIONS- Education: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent certificate required. Associate's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
- Certifications: Current certification with the American Health Information Management Association, the American Academy of Professional Coders, or equivalent coding certification preferred.
- Experience: Prior experience in the field of medicine, including medical billing or medical records, highly preferred.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret medical reports, medical coding, medical bills, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office/365 software with proficiency in spreadsheet software and PDF editing software. Able to quickly master proprietary and vendor software applications.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of clinic, hospital, or medical office operations, and the ability to master regulatory requirements and practices of diagnosis coding.

$20 - $25 an hour
This hourly wage range is what the employer reasonably expects to pay for the position based on potential employee qualifications, operational needs and other considerations consistent with applicable law. The pay scale applies only to this position and only if it is filled in Omaha, Nebraska. The pay scale may be different for other positions or in other locations.
