Job Description

The Payroll Accountant collaborates closely with the Finance and People and Culture teams Culture.

As the Payroll Accountant, you’ll take ownership of all payroll operations across Australia and New Zealand. From audits and payment processing to employee queries and account reconciliations, you’ll ensure seamless payroll management. As the key liaison for our outsourced payroll provider, you’ll maintain compliance with tax and superannuation regulations while overseeing employee benefits. You’ll also play a critical role in audits, provide payroll expertise during M&A activities, and uphold legislative standards.

This part-time role offers flexibility with 0.6FTE: either three days a week with payroll-aligned days or spread across five days a week - ideal for parents or guardians working around school hours!

  • Conducting pre-close audits of payroll, as prepared by the outsourced payroll team, and processing payments.
  • Addressing employee enquiries regarding pay, deductions, taxes, superannuation, and other payroll-related matters.
  • Managing the relationship with outsourced payroll provider, NLC, and MYOB.
  • Preparing payroll tax reports and submitting PAYG returns through the ATO portal.
  • Ensuring accurate calculation and timely payment of SG contributions for sole traders in compliance with relevant laws.
  • Performing regular reconciliations of payroll-related accounts, including tax, superannuation, and other deductions or contributions.
  • Administering employee benefits, including novated leasing agreements and various deductions.
  • Providing payroll advice to the People & Culture regarding employees on Work Cover and ACC.
  • Providing payroll advisory support in relation to M&A activity and integration processes.
  • Assisting with external audits and providing necessary documentation.
  • Ensuring the Group’s compliance with payroll regulations and laws in Australia and New Zealand.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance or related field
  • Demonstrated experience working across both Australian and New Zealand payroll
  • Strong understanding of Australian and New Zealand payroll regulations, including tax, superannuation, and other statutory requirements, with experience ensuring compliance.
  • Experience working closely with an outsourced payroll provider (based in Australia and New Zealand)
  • Experience with payroll software (MYOB PayGlobal preferred), as well as proficiency in MS Excel for reporting and reconciliation.
  • Ability to respond to and resolve employee payroll queries in a timely and professional manner, ensuring accuracy and satisfaction.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail when reviewing payroll and preparing reports.
  • Strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive payroll information with discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams, ensuring smooth payroll operations and strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, leadership, and external service providers.
