Department of Public Safety Project Specialist

The Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK-12 students across 25 school buildings in the increasingly diverse urban community of Lansing, MI. We are seeking a technically minded and systems-driven Project Specialist to join our Department of Public Safety. This role focuses on modernizing outdated systems, transforming manual and paper-based processes into efficient electronic workflows, and leveraging technology to improve operational efficiency. The ideal candidate has strong project management and systems improvement experience, with a background in operations, IT systems, or organizational modernization.


Qualifications - Education
  • A bachelor’s degree in information systems, business administration, organizational management, or a related field is required.
  • Master’s degree in a technical field, business analytics, or organizational leadership preferred.


Qualifications - Experience
  • 3+ years of experience in systems improvement, project management, or operations required.
  • Demonstrated Successfully assessed and upgraded workflows, processes, and technology platforms.
  • Experience transitioning manual or paper-based processes into streamlined electronic systems.
  • Experience working with enterprise systems (e.g., payroll, budget tracking, compliance) and implementing new technologies.
  • Familiarity with public safety protocols and compliance frameworks (e.g., PA-330) is a plus but not required.


Qualifications - Skills
  • Software & Tools: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, CRM platforms (e.g., Arbor), WordPress, Google Suite, Power Automate, and basic HTML/CSS.
  • Project Management: Experience with Scrum, Lean Six Sigma certification, and Agile methodologies to drive process improvement and efficiency.
  • Learning Management Systems (LMS): Familiarity with platforms such as Quercus/Canvas and Salesforce for training and educational initiatives.
  • Social Media Management: Skilled in tools like Canva, Hootsuite, and social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) to support communication and engagement initiatives.
  • Process Digitization: Expertise in analyzing and transforming manual workflows into digital systems to enhance efficiency and accessibility.
  • Data Visualization: Competence in creating dashboards and reports using PowerBI or similar tools to track and present metrics.


Sample Job Responsibilities
  • Systems Modernization:
  • Evaluate and overhaul outdated departmental systems, including payroll, budgeting, and compliance tracking.
  • Collaborate with IT to implement and integrate new technologies to automate manual processes.
  • Lead the transition of paper-based workflows into efficient, user-friendly electronic systems.
  • Develop workflows, training materials, and documentation to support system transitions.
  • Operational Process Improvement:
  • Analyze existing departmental workflows to identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Design and implement processes that enhance accuracy, reduce redundancy, and improve data accessibility.
  • Collaborate with district stakeholders to ensure alignment with broader organizational goals.
  • Project Management:
  • Manage cross-functional projects to ensure timely and successful execution of departmental initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Department of Public Safety Central Office Manager to align project goals with district priorities.
  • Track project milestones, report on progress, and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Policy and Compliance Administration:
  • Support developing and implementing policies and procedures that align with best practices and state requirements.
  • Oversee compliance-related updates, including certifications, safety protocols, and emergency management systems.
  • Emergency Systems and Safety Coordination:
  • Modernize emergency management systems, including digital maps, drills, and protocol updates.
  • Collaborate with principals, IT, and building managers to improve access and accuracy of safety data.


$46,606 - $77,041 a year
This role will be placed on the Meet and Confer Specialist scale.
