About the Team
The Product Policy team is responsible for the development, implementation, enforcement, and communication of the policies that govern use of OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT, GPTs, the GPT store, Sora, and the OpenAI API. As a member of this team, you will be instrumental in developing policy approaches to best enable both innovative and responsible use of AI so that our groundbreaking technologies are truly used to benefit all people.
About the Role
As a Product Policy advisor and early member of the Product Policy team, you will provide direct policy support to product teams as they launch new multi-modal products and features. You will leverage an understanding of AI technology, consumer and developer products, as well as the policy landscape to help mitigate risks and ensure OpenAI’s products benefit all of humanity.
We’re looking for people who have previously worked in product policy roles - ideally in generative AI - and are experienced in collaborating closely with technical teams. Ideal candidates will have a depth of understanding of the AI policy landscape and will translate this knowledge into actionable, prioritized advice for product teams and company leadership. As OpenAI continues to grow, this role must quickly and effectively align diverse teams and stakeholders. Experience driving alignment across a range of functions (product, legal, research, intelligence teams, global affairs, communications) will be essential. Ideal candidates will be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Provide tailored policy advice to product teams based on a deep understanding of and empathy for the technical and business goals of the product, as well as a clear assessment of policy considerations.
Collaborate cross-functionally with teams across the company, including legal, integrity, ops, safety, communications, and others. You will translate public policy considerations for technical teams, and vice versa.
Develop clear risk assessments for new multi-modal products and features and prioritize across them. Provide operationalizable implementation standards and enforcement protocols for partner teams to leverage.
Identify opportunities to leverage data to inform our policy work.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have worked 7+ years in a product policy role at a tech company, ideally working on generative AI products
Possess excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate with product managers, engineers, researchers, and executives alike
Are comfortable with ambiguity and enjoy going 0 to 1
Are a creative thinker with an eye for opportunities to leverage data to inform policies
You could be an especially great fit if you have:
Worked on multi-modal (image, video, audio) generative AI products
