Legal Assistant (Part Time)

The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Institute is a highly successful nonprofit whose mission is to accelerate cures through stem cell research.


We are seeking a diligent and proactive Part-Time Legal Assistant to support the NYSCF legal & IP team. Reporting to the AVP, IP, Tech Transactions and Legal Affairs, you will assist with legal research, IP portfolio management, and compliance tracking. You describe yourself as detail-oriented and are able to handle multiple assignments at once. The ideal candidate will flourish in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.  


This position will be onsite at our offices located in Midtown, Manhattan. This position is flexible with a 15-25 hour work week in a part-time capacity with work hours from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday. 


What You’ll Do:
  • Support legal research on intellectual property, compliance, and life sciences regulations.
  • Support intellectual property portfolio management (patents, trademarks, copyrights).
  • Support legal compliance initiatives, including tracking and reporting requirements. 
  • In consultation with the AVP, conduct preliminary research on legal matters and report initial findings to the AVP.
  • Provide general administrative support and handle confidential information.
  • Coordinate discussions with researchers concerning ongoing third-party licensing compliance, including protocol adaptations.
  • Perform administrative and other duties as assigned.


What We’re Looking For:
  • Bachelor’s degree (Pre-Law, Business, Political Science, or related field).
  • Strong interest in IP, legal transactions, and life sciences.
  • Ability to handle multiple, concurrent projects and generate high-quality work. 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent research skills, including use of legal research engines (e.g., Westlaw Practical Law).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Adobe Acrobat Pro. 
  • Experience working as part of a team, with strong cooperation and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, adapt, and work independently.  


$35 - $35 an hour
The compensation for this role is $35 per hour and the Part-Time Legal Assistant is expected to work between 15-25 hours per week. This position offers a hybrid schedule with at least 3-days on-site per week, however, work location is flexible with approval from the AVP. NYSCF’s Hours are: 9:30-5:30pm.
